  1. Thanks for the info, (apparently it is females who do better than males on vegan diets, according to this Vegan Cat Faq)

We probably could feed her only vegan food with no problems, because she catches a steady fare of mice having several acres to roam on. My goal, however, isn't to transition her to a vegan diet (she isn't mine anyway)- I feed her about 1/4 of the time, seeing as I get home from work first, and she rushes inside to greet me, and proceeds to whine until I feed her :P. I just don't want to have to feed her factory farmed animal meat myself-

Call me cold, but I simply would not go out and get a pet that I had to sustain with animals that were factory farmed and slaughtered or fished by humans.

On that note, according to the website above, at least Dogs can be healthy on a plant-based diet, very cool...

  2. I think to some extent it is a matter of personal taste.

If one wanted 1000 percent of the daily RDA of vitamin C, one could eat 12 oranges, or one could eat 2 oranges, and take 1/8th of a teaspoon of vitamin C powder too.

There are some cool products out there, though they aren't a replacement for an otherwise healthy diet and lifestyle. Some might say supplements are "unnatural" in the historical, evolutionary scheme of things, but by that argument, so is agriculture, brushing one's teeth, and prolonged exercise or weightlifting as its own persuit...

  3. Probably a lot of people have read the recent studies about Pomegranates and Pomegranate juice being a super antioxidant, fighting cancer, etc. I recently started taking a Pomegranate juice concentrate (called PomeGreat :P ), and it seems very cool. The polyphenol-ey texture/taste is reminiscent of good white tea.

Anyway, I just thought I would recommend it- seeing as how the Pom juice in stores (also from concentrate) is rather expensive if one were to take it every day, but the Jarrow concentrate is like 40 cents a serving-

  4. Um, I think I might have had a mild case of gout at one point in my pre-vegan days. I was working in a music studio, living hard and eating a steady diet of pizza and baked ziti with extra mozarella (shivers....) One of my legs got quite swollen at one point for a few days. I drank a lot of water and it seemed to go away

  5. Seaweed is not a reliable source of B12. In fact, it contains B12 analogs, which are not absorbed by the body as B12. Some people actually end up with B12 deficiencies if they overdo on the Nori and don't supplement with actual B12.

Good to know, perhaps I should do more research- In any case, I think I am getting more than enough B12 at the moment, but note to self, refrain from Nori-only diet :P

  6. Hello,

The house I live in has a cat, and I have decided that although my housemates can feed her whatever they want and I can't stop them, I don't want to have to feed her cat food that contains animal meat or "byproducts."

Can anyone recommend a vegan cat food, and where to buy? I realize cats are omnivores or carnivores, and if she catches mice, I suppose that is part of nature, but the element of humans raising billions of animals in factory farms and using their byproducts to feed pets strikes me as totally unnatural and abhorrent.

    Thanks,

    Joel

  7. I don't take it every day, as it is in the Silk soymilk I buy, and in the Vega now, and there is some in seaweed.

Once every 2 or 3 days I take part of a Solgar vegetarian B complex (Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, B6, Folic Acid, B12, Biotin). Because it has 25 to 30 times the RDA of a few of the ingredients, I just sprinkle about a sixth of a capsule at a time into some water or juice.

Some vitamins have upper limits, so don't supplement too much- I took some nutritional yeast at the same time as the B complex once, and got a wicked Niacin flush, I thought I was dying...

That said, I think B vitamins are awesome, but obviously supplements should not take the place of eating lots of fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, etc-

  8. I had no problem with vega "emissions..." Try taking an acidophillus/beneficial digestive bacteria supplement for a few weeks, that should do wonders. L. Reuteri is pretty awesome too.

I had some increase when I first started eating a lot of grains/legumes, but my body adjusted rather quickly. Good luck...

  9. Just ordered 1 large tub of natural, 1 of berry, after tasting the samples Robert sent with my T-Shirt.

It may *seem* expensive, but at about $3.80 a serving, if it saves me 15 minutes in the morning or after a workout, that is money earned. Besides, it tastes great, like real food, better than just a powder.

I also love Nutiva hemp protein and Jarrow rice protein. And lots of other products. These are a few of my favorite things....

  10. I love Jarrow Green Defense

It has Yayaema Chlorella and like 25 other whole green superfoods. Very tasty, and only .50 cents a serving at the above link, that beats the heck out of those $4 dollar Odwalla or Naked type drinks, and has far more and better ingredients.

And for those who playa hate on whether dehydrated green foods are worth it or have nutrients, I say, at 50 cents a pop, I will drink it just for the taste! Yum!

  11. Peta's "Meet your Meat" worked on me, but I can see how it might not work on everyone. People are very, very skilled at denying the truth and rationalizing insane and barbaric behaviors.

Unfortunately, neither logic nor emotional appeal will work on some people... Most of our race is addicted to blood at the moment, and custom is king. God willing, sanity and compassion will win out.

  12. It was kind of cool, mixed crowd, all age groups, vegans and non-vegans alike, some very good food, and my Miso Soup was a hit. I will probably try to stop by again next month. Very friendly people. The woman who started it is a nutritionist at a local hospital, and a vegan- cool job!

  13. Awesome- I am relatively new to veganism (tho a vegetarian for about 2 years), and am loving it as well, and I seem to be actually putting on weight with the workouts. I carry a VeganBodybuilding.com flyer for whenever people ask me why/how I decided to go vegan!

  14. awesome, welcome to the board-

I have always been amazed by marathoners/ Ironman, etc. My dad runs marathons, and the time investment for training is just mindblowing. More power to ya-

  15. Sure, I get to become more popular, which was always a goal of mine, but I am an ethical vegan for more than a decade and I live my life for that cause; to reduce animal suffering on a worldwide level.

Rock on, props to that cause- And thanks to you and everyone else here again. Awesome job. The world would be a sad place without vegans. More vegans = happier world
