  1. Now there's no excuse for not reading this book. The entire text has been placed online in PDF format! Please pass along this information along to anyone and everyone! Peace! http://worldpeacediet.org/images/WorldPeaceDiet07.pdf
  2. Has anyone else checked out the "Planet Earth" series? It was aired on the BBC and the Discovery Channel, but since I don't have cable, I am renting it on Netflix now. I have watched the first six episodes so far, and it is just AMAZING! The aerial photography is spectacular, and they cover many animals and places in the far corners of the earth I had not heard about... Highly recommended look at our planet and our fellow creatures!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_Earth_%28TV_series%29
  3. I saw this Chuckwalla on one of my many hikes here in Arizona, and snapped a pic. This one was on Squaw Peak. From the coloring, it is a male. Almost a foot long, too -- pretty cool! http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/8651/90425103bf8.jpg
  4. Did anyone see the lunar eclipse last night? It was pretty cool. I snapped this photo around 3am with my small point and shoot digital camera. There are much better pictures elsewhere on the web. I would have liked to take a picture through my Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope, but I still need to order the right mounts to do this. Perhaps more impressive astrophotos will be posted once that happens. Peace. http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/8857/13400857um2.jpg
  5. Thanks, Bigbwii. I wasn't aware of this. Can you expound upon these rules or point me to a resource? Are the almonds heated when the shells are removed? Where is the line? I thought one definition was that if it can sprout, it is considered raw...
  6. Did anyone else see this? Starting in the fall of 2007, truly raw almonds will not be available in the USA or Canada. The Almond Board of California, which oversees virtually 100 percent of the almonds grown and consumed in the United States and Canada, is now implementing plans to pasteurize all almonds at temperatures up to 158 degrees (F) and yet have them intentionally and falsely labeled as "raw." This is nuts!! I am so mad!! Seems like a done deal and that we cannot do anything about it, aside from planting an almond tree in your yard... 7. Thanks for posting those pics! I graduated from Cal a few years ago and these are bringing back lots of memories from the football and basketball games with friends... I met a vegan for the first time when I was in Berkeley... I remember thinking she was strange. It took me another five years before I went vegan myself. Now being vegan just seems normal. Go Bears!
  8. Here's a pretty interesting interview with vegan ultramarathoner Scott Jurek -- he talks in detail about his training regimen. http://www.eliterunning.com/features/54/
  9. I highly recommend this book! The World Peace Diet has raised my consciousness on so many levels. The book is very well researched (with many scholarly references), and approaches the subject of veganism from a spiritual perspective. The central thesis of the book is that when humans began herding animals 10,000 years ago, and seeing them as commodities to be used, that the violence and disconnectedness required to do this spread -- to the control and maltreatment of other humans. So in our "herding culture" we practice, three times a day, since birth (most of us), disconnecting with reality of the violence that it takes for animal based foods to make it to our plates. This makes us very good at disconnecting from other humans as well, and as a consequence, we exploit others and are violent towards them. For example, according to the book, the ancient Aryan Sanskrit word for war, gavyaa, means "desire for more cattle." There's much more to it than that, and Will talks about it in the book much more eloquently than I could hope to do here. Here's a link to Will speaking about the book at World Vegetarian Day last year. http://www.sfvs.org/wvd/media/tuttle_audio.mp3 Peace and love to all... go vegan!
  10. I just saw this in Vegan Outreach's e-Newsletter. Thought it would be of interest to many on this forum. Vegan marathoner and Ohio activist extraordinaire Dan Kuzma has signed up for the Mohican Trail 100 Mile Race on June 16-17. Dan is seeking sponsors for this run, with proceeds going to print more copies of Vegan Outreach's Why Vegan. http://www.veganoutreach.org/kuzma.html Run, Dan, Run!!
  11. I'm not running Chicago this weekend... but I wanted to say good luck, RawRunnerBethany!! Run strong!!
  12. Thanks for the reply, veganpotter... I was on the veganfitness.net forum yesterday and found that someone asked almost the same question: http://www.veganfitness.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8096 Looks like I can order one from the folks in the UK or get creative and design my own shirt!
  13. I'll be running one of the marathons in Arizona this winter, but I haven't decided which one yet... this will be my first marathon. Training starts now! Just ran another half marathon this past weekend in just a few seconds over 1 hour, 30 minutes (the goal was to come in at 1:29:XX or better)... but this was still a personal best for me -- by more than 4 minutes!! Does anyone know of any shirts/tanks which say "vegan" on them (or something to that effect) which are made of technical fabric (not cotton)? I'd like to advertise that you can be an endurance athlete and be a happy, healthy vegan... there are large crowds at some of these marathon races.
  14. Read for yourself... those vegan veggie burgers in your freezer may be harboring nasty ingredients... Many "natural" foods contain questionable taste additives like yeast extract http://www.newstarget.com/020426.html I looked in my freezer and I found that autolyzed yeast extract is in the Gardenburger GardenVegan burger, and that Boca Vegan burgers contain yeast extract. However, I am happy to report that Dr. Praeger's California Veggie Burgers do not contain any yeast extract!! These are available at Trader Joe's.
  15. No worries, sprouting is easy with the Easy Sprout made by Sproutamo (http://www.sproutamo.com/). I have used this sprouter for almost a year now and it is awesome!! Nothing better than your own sprouts!! They sell it online at wheatgrasskits.com and sproutpeople.com; it's about $13 and worth every penny.
  16. Mike Adams has some other good cartoons up as well (see right sidebar)... http://www.newstarget.com/020374.html
  17. Cool, I'm training for my first marathon this winter. I have done many 5ks, 10ks, and a couple half marathons. A good place to start is Hal Higdon's website, he's got some good training schedules there: http://www.halhigdon.com/ For good running related discussions, check out the Cool Running forums: http://www.coolrunning.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi There's quite a few veg-heads on those boards as well. Keep on runnin'!
  18. 20-35g sounds on the low side to me, but the amount of protein that your body requires depends on your body weight. For endurance athletes, the book Becoming Vegan says 1.2-1.7g/kg is required. I run 5 or 6 times a week myself, and my favorite sources of raw protein (although I'm not raw myself) are: raw hemp protein powder (Manitoba Harvest brand), raw hemp seed nut (also Manitoba Harvest brand and good on salads), raw nuts (esp. almonds), and raw lentils (soaked overnight, on salads). The hemp is great stirred in with a glass of juice or in a fresh berry smoothie!! Just 2 tablespoons has 15g of protein and 1.2g of omega-3 fatty acids. Here's the website for the hemp: http://www.manitobaharvest.com/products/index.asp Keep on runnin'!

An update on my quest for a sub-20 minute 5k: I entered a 5k here in Arizona a couple weeks ago and ran it in 20:00 even... so close! Mile splits were something like 6:26, 6:41, 6:10... It was a hilly course -- out uphill, back downhill, and it was also pretty warm outside (~90F) even though it was still 6:30am. To the more experienced runners out there (maybe runner can answer this): Are there any books that you can recommend on bringing these times down further? I have read material from Higdon, Galloway, and Glover... Keep on running!
  20. Hello loveliberate, I'm in Phoenix... not so great weather now, but awesome in the winter! Hey veganpotter, for the weight to come off, just trained hard and ate a lot more healthy food -- cut out the meat, dairy, eggs, and refined carbs... no secrets.

Great idea, Robert! I have only been running for a year and a half or so (never ran in high school like some). I'm not nearly as fast... but hopefully these times of mine will be coming down soon! I'll be running some 5ks this summer, and I hope to get under 20:00... eventually, I'd like to break 40:00 for the 10k also. All of these times were run 5 months ago or more. I keep getting faster on my training runs. 5k: 21:00 10k: 43:05 half marathon: 1:34:35 --J
  22. Hello from Arizona! I've been vegetarian for two years, and vegan for one and a half (mostly for health reasons, although compassion for animals and a concern for the environment are also very important to me). Around the time I went vegan, I started running to get in shape. Unfortunately, even though I was a swimmer in high school, and worked out in college, I had let my diet and lifestyle slide into unhealthy territory. I lost about 40 pounds in the process of running and going vegan, and I'm back to my high school weight (lean and mean)! My long term fitness goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon (3:10 for my age). I ran my first half marathon recently in 1:34, so I think I'm on my way to this goal. I was never a runner before, but like I said, I was a pretty good swimmer when I was younger (even set a couple club records in the butterfly). I also ride my bike to work, so maybe triathlons are in my future as well? Thank you Robert for your fine example to all athletes and for this forum. I look forward to meeting all you other athletes and vegans, especially runners. Thanks for reading. Peace to all. --J
