JW
Our PC is sloooowly expiring and we have been toying with the idea of buying a Mac.One issue is that my son DESPERATELY wants to play Battle for Middle Earth but it doesn't seem to be a Mac game.I think it's on X-Box but not on Gamecube or PS2. Any thoughts or advice?
MontanaVegan
If all the programs you need were available for the Mac, then Mac might be the best choice. There is so much more software available for Windows machines.I have friends who are diehard Mac/Linux geeks. One even has "Mac Guru" on his car's license plates. They also have a high end Windows machine because they are also gamers. How old is your computer? What CPU speed? RAM? Windows 98, ME, or XP?A slow death is usually Windows being infected, and nothing wrong with the computer.Restoring Windows from the CDs that came with the computer should fix this problem. If you don't already know, using the restore CDs will delete all your files on your computer. You will need to back up everything and start over.Make sure you read the previous 2 lines twice. There are many free programs that will help keep your computer clean.Kids on the internet can usually get them infected no matter what protection you have installed. One click on the wrong popup is all it takes. We've also had Norton/Symantec and McAffee be the cause a lot lately. offense74
I have a mac . Always been an Apple fan.If you want to run pc games that shouldn't be a problem anymore since the new macs come with an intel chip and there is no longer a hardware problem. The software to run windows on a mac is made by apple and it should work quite flawlessly. And it is not like before when running windows on a mac (i.e. slow and frustrating) since it doesn't emulate the pc harware via software anymore but instead runs directly on the mac hardware. Now, go buy a mac
JW
Thanks for the info guys! Our PC is a HP which is 4 years old (it was an "out of production model" then)It's definitely time for an upgrade. Running Windows on the Mac wouldn't be my 1st choice, but if it works that well it is certainly an option.Perhaps it would be easier to invest in an X-Box for my son (okay ...I'd use it too)
MontanaVegan
I have a mac . Always been an Apple fan.I've wondered if you were an Apple fan since the first time I saw your avatar I wish Apple would sell just the OS so I could install it on my computer. It's definitely time for an upgrade. It must be at least a 1.5 GHz computer. That's still very usable except for the latest games. What's the model number? Usually 4 digits on the front. The restore CD will bring it back to the day it was new.But like I said earlier, everything!! you put on there will be gone!! I don't know how much of a computer geek you are.Building your own can get you a better computer than a name brand. You won't save any money, and most likely will spend a little more. But it should run much better. Odidnetne
I'd suggest Linux myself. Linux can look just like Windows and has all the functionality, but is much faster.
suz
My desktop is a PC and my laptop is an ibook G4 -- bought about a year ago mainly because it was cheap, tiny and I thought it would make me look cool. I thought it would be an easy transition for me as I'm an 'artistically inclined' person. Boy, was I wrong. I can't navigate on the thing to save my life (I need a right click button!), and my hard drive is beyond capacity and I have no idea how to clean it (even after exhaustive google searches, using cocktail, and dumping 4 Gigs of music off it). My suggestion is find a friend with a mac and spend an afternoon tinkering on it. See if you 'get' how it works. I really wish I had 'gotten' it, but I didn't and sadly I won't be replacing it with another mac.
offense74
I have a mac . Always been an Apple fan.I've wondered if you were an Apple fan since the first time I saw your avatar It's me in front of the Apple store on 5:th avenue in New York.We don't have apple owned stores in Sweden so it was cool to check them out when I saw them. Got my current iPod from the store in Santa Monica from the leftover winnings in Las Vegas. The sales tax was low in LA compared to Sweden but I would probably gotten it even cheaper in (for example) Las Vegas but on the other hand with all the people in Santa Monica sleeping on the street maybe the extra tax goes to something good
offense74
suz:The first thing you do when you buy a mac is to throw away the worthless apple mouse and buy one with more buttons. Odidnetne:Linux rocks but can be a little hard to work with and configure depending on the distribution and the setup. When I was a student (computing science) we ran Sun Solaris. Also the Apple core is a micro kernel with unix (open BSD) as it's foundation. I run some things in the Terminal every now and then. Also made a few csh scripts. Odidnetne
It can be a little hard to get used to, but once you do, the time spent learning it is well worth it.

JW
There's got to be something to it veganpotter.Every MAC user you talk to is extremely passionate about them. I got a quote for the 20" unit on the weekend.I'm leaning towards getting the MAC and a gaming system for my son's pleasure (oh yeah ...mine too) Interesting comment by the sales rep we talked too:he said that "you wouldn't believe how many people come in and buy a new system and are back 6-8 months later to buy a new $800 video card so they can play the current games".I certainly want no part of that!!!! pelicanAndrew
You don't need an 800 dollar vid card unless you want to run a quad- SLI in which case you would need a 1200 dollar server motherboard. That's for doing things like playing WoW while editing video and doing your taxes on two monitors. 200-300 to for a vid card will run for at least a year, more likely two. No offense to sales reps but he probably jsut wanted you to buy the card right then and there so he could get commision. If you want tips for a gaming system i'll post my specs for mine. Built it with the help of my IT guy. Works good for school as well obviously and i should be doing music and graphics on it as soon as i get some money for software. Crap, gotta get some pants on and get to class.

MontanaVegan
Pentium/7331 GB hdI think it's time to upgrade Yeah, that machine is showing it's age.It would still function fine for internet and simple tasks.Definitely wouldn't hold up to the new games. I still occasionally use my old 300MHz (96MB RAM) laptop. But only when we install a new digital copier/printer on a network.

On windows you use the ctrl key to give these commands and on a mac you use the command key (the one with the apple symbol on it).
