the Asocial Ape
hey there. my name is will. i'm thirty-eight, i've been vegan for a little over sixteen years. i'm not a terribly healthy vegan - i eat lots of vegetables, mostly raw, and lentils and rice, and tons of bean soup, i also love BBQ chips, beer, pastries, tofurkey lunch meat, fake chicken patties, and anything that comes out of a deep fryer (so long as it's vegan). i just quit smoking for the Nth time, but i think it's going to stick finally. i write dull software to pay the bills. to try to make a difference, my wife and i do animal rescue work, mainly with feral cats, but also dogs, wildlife, what ever crosses our path. we share our home with nineteen ex-feral cats, and two dogs, both abuse survivors. music i like - Led Zep, Skynyrd, Sabbath, Hendrix, Steve Earle, Bad Religion, and socialist singer songwriters, like Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs, and Alistair Hulett. i've been skating quite a bit since January, but other than that, i'm sedentary. i'm starting to feel my age, and so i finally went to the gym for the first time in about twenty years this past friday. i'm going again after work today to do legs and arms. my buddy a work is big, and he said he'll show me how to do a deadlift, and that that and some other core exercises should be my main things until i actually gain some muscle, as i have NONE now. finding out how weak i am was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. i don't know why it was so hard to get in there. animal stuff that some people might balk at gives me no problem - slithering through a tiny drainage pipe to grab some kittens, getting chewed up rescuing a trapped raccoon, running into highway traffic to grab a tortoise - all those are easy, so WTF haven't i been able to go to the gym? that kind of fear has been way harder to overcome. anyway - i am going to keep not smoking and i am going to keep going to the gym. i'm hoping i can get some advice from you all when i need it, and that by reading the posts here, i can get keep focused and motivated should i feel my resolve slipping. thanks for having the forums, and most of all, thanks for being vegan! -aApe

Veganitaliana
Welcome! Quite the menagerie you've got at home. Isn't nice to share your life with so many great friends? Hope you make some more here. Ciao
the Asocial Ape
Isn't nice to share your life with so many great friends?heh. yeah. but at breakfast time they can be annoying. the dogs are content to wait until i've had some coffee and eaten to be fed and played with. the cats on the other hand, think they're each the center of the universe, and want everything right away.also, they eat homecooked food, and a couple have allergies, and have to be fed separately, and of _course_ they don't want their food, they want what the others are having, while the others want what _they_ are having... we love them to pieces, but wish they could go to camp for a couple weeks sometime, like human kids do. Hope you make some more here.thanks!
flanders77
Welcome aboard! My suggestion: Maybe you should start a training log and a non-smoking log if you have not already done so
Odidnetne
Hey, glad to have you aboard, it's easy to quit the junk food when you eat the healthy foods you were talking about. You get tired of the junk food eventually too, which works in your favor.

CollegeB
Welcome to the forum. The idea of a cat camp was particularly amusing. I hope you enjoy the forum.
the Asocial Ape
hey thanks y'all. i don't know if it counts as a log, but i've got my workout for each day on spreadsheet pages, and noted my weights, sets, and reps for each exercise. the first time in each day was sort of all over the place, as i was finding my correct weights to use. i was planning on keeping it going to be able to refer to to prove to myself that i'm progressing (once i actually progress, of course). the not smoking should be ok without a log, as, ideally, it would just be a bunch of calendar pages with '0' for the number of smokes i had. heh. i've been doing fine with that so far. i'm past the cravings so it should be clear sailing. i felt more comfortable yesterday at the gym than the first time. i just look about a foot above everyone's head when i get there, and then when i'm working out, take off my specs which renders me pretty much blind, so that was cool. heh. self confidence via myopia. the Asocial Ape
thanks Josh! ps - i'm with you on the cooked food. i love me some carrot and celery sticks, or cuke slices in vinegar, but there's no way i would go raw. i love grilled tofurkey bratwust, scrambled tofu, and (oh my god) falafel. falafel is the food of the GODS. note: i am not cracking on vegan raw foodists - go for it, and i respect you.
