  1. Starting Jan 3, 2008 http://www.nbc.com/The_Celebrity_Apprentice/

Marilu Henner and Carol Alt(Raw foodist since 1993), are among the 14 celebrities. The charity Marilu is playing for is PCRM: The Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine(They recomend a Vegan diet- even for babies). http://www.pcrm.org/

I'm hoping they get in some promotion of veganism. We could use it after that crap from Carol simontacchi on Coast to coast(mailto:[email protected]). These celebs are widely know for their way of eating. And they've both writen books concerning it.

  2. Sounds like calorie restriction isn't for you. And it's not nessessary for losing weight. If you eat all you want of natural foods(especially fruit and veggies), your weight should normalize.

One key is to focus on what you should eat, not on what you shouldn't. Eventually, you'll get used to healthy food and see it as just the food you eat. I spent years obsessing over food, from lack of entertainment or satisfaction in my life. I never was happy that way. I eventually removed ALL unhealthy food from me diet and mind - it's just not a possibility for me now(like cocaine or skydiving). To satisfy my sweet tooth(all 26 of them), 10 pieces of fruit a day does it....especially very ripe bananas. Banana's are now like junk food to me.

And not to gloat, but inspire: When I have a stressful situation, I know my body is burning nutrients and creating toxins. So I eat better than usual. First thing I do is drink tea with vitamin C, exercise to use up the adrenaline, then some quick digesting food: fruit.

  3. I figured there'd be more replies here. Stress is such a big factor in human health.

veganpotter - I used to stress out over food, but not much now. My stress lever rose due to pressure to get a progect at work finished faster than possible.

Stress is already bad for health....but does a different way of eating compound the stress?

  4. This is a bit strong

    No.....This is a bit strong

I hope that you do not

become sick from your lack of proper nutrition.

To be fair I just read through this thread .....he is not convinced.... the information he has been given - according to him - isn't cutting it.
It seems you read through the thread the same way Jack read the info he was given - maybe with a closed mind, maybe while watching TV.

I've been a science inthusiast for 24 years, but as I became wiser(less incredibly naive), I became disappointed in scientists. They need to see something in a beeker or they ignore it. They have closed minds, don't use common sense....and they're corrupt. There are still scientists who say the mind and body are NOT connected, and say a back ache is from a "slipped disc" and can't be from mental stress. Here, their education is actually getting in the way. Turns out, science is not reallity....it's just a way for us to understand reality. And it's limited.

And, science has been wrong SO many times.

To say that eating meat is an idea thought up by our 'twisted modern society' is just wrong.
I didn't mention meat. You read into what I said. So it seems you're looking for a debate on meat vs veg........on a vegan forum. Why?

In particular, eating fish and meat has helped develop our brains.

    How do you know?

  5. I have weeks when there's alot of pressure. That causes muscle tension/weakness, making it harder to do my physical type of work.

What's the best and or healthiest diet for these times?

I'm open to alot of different diets. I've eaten fruitarian and raw.

Right now I've been eating raw for 8 days, and some stressful things came up. I think the diet is making the weakness worse. Is it OK to keep eating raw, even with the anxiety?

  6. Who's to say what's natural at this stage in human history.

Humans have a natural curiosity for trying new things. It often gets us into trouble. But meat is not important to eat.

Zack, are you including nuts as fruit?

Have you read this page about how fruitarianism works? http://www.charliesgym.info/wst_page2.html

“you have to assume that all the fruits and nuts that modern fruitarians eat were available in the same place, and they were not.

The first humans wouldn’t have stayed in the same place (as other primates don’t). They wandered around (light exercise), and ate what they came across. Also, humans’ natural habitat was in the hot regions where fruit, veggies and nuts were everywhere.

The brain requires a lot of fuel

But digesting meat, grain, and cooked food also requires a lot of fuel. So I think it balances out.

  7. Yea, it's a sad state. It saddens me that these people are so SURE they're right about something when their only education is commercial slogans like: "Milk it does a body good", and "The encredible edible egg".

    "proper nutrition"

I take it he means our twisted modern society's IDEA of proper nutrition.

"I can easily obtain my B vitamins and protein from lean red meat "

There's nothing easy about obtaining anything from meat; it's very difficult on us plant-eaters.

"Where do I get my B vitamins, protein, vitamins and minerals from vegetables and fruits, or is that possibe?"

Now he's asking questions about a diet that he's CONvinced is bad.

What did he expect to acomplish?.....I don't think he'll return to answer.

  8. I chew and eat watermelon seeds. Canteloupe seeds have a hard surface, so I chew them up, swallow the inner part and spit out the "shells".

why dont people eat the outside of a banana or an orange peel?

Orange peels will give us indigestion, so people learned not to eat them.

Apple seeds have some poison so a big no no!

Ooops! I just started eating some - from home grown apples 'cause they're really soft.

Veganitaliana, those aren't good words to describe plants and animals. There's kooks out there that already think plants feel pain.

  9. It feels good to do something so basic. 10 years ago a block away from me, there were 4 orange trees on the side of the road(not someones property ). Over 4 months I must have picked and ate 200 oranges, until the trees were removed.

I'm now living on a property with some apple trees. 2 hrs ago I had some. It's good to eat wild foods to get nutrients thats lacking in food from over-worked farms.

  10. I heard melons are the 2nd most nutritious fruit(berries are the 1st). So it's good to juice the rinds. To make the juice taste better, add some cantalope.

Melons are loaded with vitamin A,B,C, and minerals.

I've read that watermelon has the same % of protein as mothers milk(7%). I just found this website

    http://www.frugivore.info/frequentlyaskedquestionspage.html

comparing milk with fruit and why fruit is the BEST food!

I've been eating a raw produce diet for a week that included watermelon.

  11. Are you a road cyclist???

As opposed to mountain biking? Yea, I stick to the pavement. Nothing serious, just for fun and to get around.

I said "5 bananas at a time", not per day. I had 12 yesterday; not that I try for a big number; It just felt right.

  12. I've never heard of GMO bananas. I can never find a good list, or how to avoid GMO's on the net. Does anyone know a good site?

So I went shopping yesterday without much hope for non-GMO melon, and I found the un-amaginable!: At a produce stand - Org Watermelon for........29 cents a lb.!!!

That's cheaper than ANY produce I've seen. The average for produce here is $1 lb.

  13. Hi. This is my (late) introduction. I joined this forum in Nov.

I'm male, and have been a vegan for 13 years. I was raised in a family that ate reasonably well, so becoming a vegan wasn't hard.

It all started with 2 main problems I've always had (no matter what my diet is): intestinal probs and stress(Type-A), the latter getting me to read about nutrition, which got me to go vegan. Eating lighter helps, but I really needed to change my type-A thinking. It was a blessing in disguise, as I now have control over diet AND mind.

I've done small fasts, and eaten raw for a week at a time, and I'm going to go 98% raw for August. I love fruit. This forum is the 1st time I've heard of people other than me who eat 5 bananas at a time.

I've always lifted weights - off and on. I'm a hard gainer, and quite thin. But I'll always keep trying and I like lifting. I also like cycling.

I've been playing drums for 23 years, and I'm REALLY GOOD (vertuoso level). So this is where I'm most impressive.

Favorite music group: RUSH. That's related to my great drumming since the drummer is the best drummer in rock history - Neil Peart.

  14. They say to wash raw produce(also your hands) - but with what? I assume water and soap. But that doesn't get rid of things like e coli.

I've always rubbed with water. Now, after getting food poisoning and reading about it, I know water isn't enough.

So, what do you all use?

I read about spraying Hydrogen Peroxide, rinsing, then spraying vinegar and rinsing.(not combining them).http://www.mercola.com/2001/jul/21/vinegar.htm

Would you say that's effective enough?

  15. I want to start a high raw / high fruit diet.

Make a slow transition - taking a few weeks.

I CANT FIGURE OUT WHEN TO EAT & WHEN TO STOP EATING
Do you mean by meal size, or hunger? With fruit, it's hard to go wrong. Find out how much it takes to stuff you, and eat 70% of that. You should have fruit every 1 - 1.5 hours. But after veggies and condenced food, go 3+ hours before eating again.
  16. I've been here reading about the Raw diet, and that link was good reading. I've been vegan for 13 years, but I feel it's not enough. I've always had digestive probs, no matter what I ate - exept a fruit/vegetable diet. And more foods are giving me problems.

In the 90's, I read a book where the author said he believed humans are fruitarians. Since then, I always thought we were meant to be fruit-eaters(like the other primates).

  17. Rush

    B-52's

    Barrage

Craig Chaqico – amazing for bicycling

I don't seek out Vegan-friendly bands, but by coincidence, B-52's are mostly vegan.

The first 3 bands are also my favorite, and all making new CD's(and 2 bands are from the 70's).

After Christmas trying to explain to relatives there’s nothing wrong with a Vegan diet, I put on Rush's "communication" themed CD. Some lyrics:

    Half the World -

    Half of us divided

    Like a torn-up photograph

    Half of us are trying

    to reach the other half

    ...other RUSH lyrics:

    Ignorance and prejudice

    And fear

    Walk hand in hand

    the things that we fear

are a weapon to be held against us

    Xanadu -

To break my fast on honeydew

And drink the milk of Paradise

    The odds get even

    New World Man -

    He's a rebel and a runner

    He's a signal turning green!

YES! Can you feel the Rush?

    Songs:

    Mr. Hollands Opus

    Magic Power

    Rollin’ with the changes

  18. Thanks for the replies.

Before going vegan, I ate 3,000 calories a day. That maintained my 140 lbs. So, I am naturally thin.

So I thought protein powder would be the answer: extra protein yet easy and fast to digest. I don't eat more than 3 meals a day because it's too filling and makes me tired. Again, protein powder doesn't cause those problems.

In this forum, beans and nuts are mentioned a lot. I eat grain 3 times as often as beans because, from the labels, they seem similar in protein and carb percentages. People say beans have more protein. Am I missing something?

  19. I’ve lifted weights off and on for 25 years. I never could gain much weight, no matter what I ate.

    Here’s some background:

    Male, 5’7”

In ‘94 I went Vegan, and lost too much weight from low calorie diets(I had read that people don’t need so much protein, and restricted calorie diets are good for you).

    1992 – 140 lbs (S.A.D. diet)

    1994 – Went Vegan

    1995 – 125 lbs

1996 - tried eating more nuts, seeds & oil. No change in weight.

1999 - Started using Soy powder with fruit and juice.

2002 - I found out that oil should be included with protein powder.

    2006 - I’m now into Rice powder.

Do the sources of the protein matter? I always figure that Amino acids are Amino acids.

How much oil should be taken with a 25gram serving of powder? How much carbs?
