  1. I bought a pair of their shoes at Moo Shoes in New York a couple weeks ago- I got the Henry's, which are excellent, very comfortable, and they seem very well made, so I would second that recommendation- -Joel
  2. Unless, perhaps, you've been eating beans? Nah, my body has gotten pretty used to what I eat, for the most part Which is probably important for people considering vegetarianism or veganism to know, that "emissions" don't tend to be a problem after the first couple weeks- JB
  3. Hey- I use Jarrow rice protein and Nutiva Hemp Protein, often together. I don't miss the whey or dairy at all- I got them from www.luckyvitamin.com and www.vitaminwarehouse.com respectively. I woudl also try searching www.pricegrabber.com or www.bizrate.com for deals- JB
  4. Here is a link, apparently the US Humane Society is suing Hudson Valley Foi Gras for 25,000,000US- http://www.recordonline.com/archive/2006/06/07/news-jghumane-06-07.html You can thank them the Humane Society here, or donate- http://www.hsus.org/contact_us/farm_animals.html And the "what you can do" poage from Farm Sancuary's anti- Foi Gras campaign http://www.nofoiegras.org/FGhelp.htm -JB
  5. **** moron. I never liked her anyway - something about her never really sat well with me. Reese Witherspoon has always creeped me out.... I don't see the attraction... JB
  6. A friend forwarded me this link http://www.nhregister.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=15000578&BRD=1281&PAG=461&dept_id=517515&rfi=8 She was rather offended as an African-American person. My reply was, "I don't think PETA is comparing african-americans or jewish people to animals, so much as they are drawing a parallel between human oppression and torture of other humans, and human oppression and torture of animals. Both humans and animals have nerves and brains and can feel pain, or else they would die- It would be absurd to claim otherwise..." Any thoughts?
  7. Electrode in the brain of a freely behaving animal sounds pretty invasive to me. That's different than "electrode on the head" or something. I think you are quite justified in protesting- And as a resident of New Haven, CT, where Yale is located, let me know if there is a place I should be protesting that sort of horrific torture- Joel
  8. My rollerblades get excellent mileage, and nearly zero emissions- JB
  9. I have been looking around for places to do pullups whenever I leave the house Does anyone have reviews of either the "Everlast Multi Function Chinning Bar" or the "Door Gym" by creative fitness? Mixed reviews on amazon, either 4-5 stars or they claim it broke- JB
  10. I won't be going to a gym until this fall, so I am somewhat limited, just have dumbells, and I've been doing pushups, though with my feet up on the bed so it is an incline. I am trying to compensate a bit by doing slower reps, like at least 5 seconds down, 5 up... anyway, I thought I had heard somewhere that going slowly will help to build mass and strength- JB
  11. Hello- I read someone warning against working out to muscle failure- What exactly does this mean, how do I know if I have reached it, and how do I avoid it? Thanks, Joel
  12. We need a list of companies that DON'T test on animals then... I suppose PETA probably has one- JB
  13. Poison ivy and snake venom are "natural" too...
  14. Don't be afraid to go to a doctor- Your health is worth it! JB
  15. On a rare junk food trip, I ate some salt and vinegar chips today (that's crisps for all you across the pond), and the inside of my mouth got all white and numb- so maybe vinegar is worse than I thought... although it never seems to bother me in other forms, I can douse hot sauce on rice and beans without noticeable harm, maybe it's just the potato chips... In other news, I've been vegan 4 weeks today, and I feel fine- Still working out, don't seem to have lost any muscle- I am taking a mineral supplement and a B vitamin complex, and have been eating more beans, soy, nuts, and taking rice and hemp protein- Seems to be coming along quite well, I don't particularly miss the cheese, yogurt, or eggs. In fact the idea of drinking milk from a bovine or eggs from an avian seems more repulsive, and the feeling of not actively contributing to their enslavement is more attractive- I feel much cleaner in general. JB
  16. So I went to that Moo Shoes place yesterday, it was pretty cool. I do recommend the store, or their website, for ordering shoes in the US or Canada. I got a belt and a pair of VeganWares "Henry's," which were somewhat more comfortable than the Vegetarian Shoes. Now when the vegan topic comes up and some smartass says "Well, what about your shoes and your belt," I have a good answer! Joel
  17. Wow, that is fast- I think driving above 55 also burns a lot more gas per mile driven, which could probably add up to thousands of dollars over a year or more- Driving is fun, but I prefer living in a city where I don't need a car- Joel
  18. Thanks CG, I will hit it up Saturday and report back- Joel
  19. I think Kant made a good point with his antimonies, delineating limits of perception and reason... Though it might be excellent poetry, metaphysics by nature is not science but speculation... JB
  20. Hey- Does anyone know of any stores that sell non-leather shoes/belts/wallets in NYC? I know I have seen some lists and sites but I can't find them... Thanks, Joel
  21. So I accidentally bought canned organic black soybeans, thinking they were regular black beans. Anyone ever heard of these, or any particular ways to prepare them? Joel
  22. Salt, or sodium, or NA+, is absolutely essential for the functioning of the human brain, nervous system, and the human body. Without salt intake, we would die. From what I have heard and read, excess salt is mainly a concern for the elderly/those with heart and vascular problems. And I thought vinegar was beneficial and an antioxidant? I mean, Vitamin C is bad too if you take 20 grams at a time, but that doesnt mean we should avoid it altogether... Joel
  23. voted for veg- which is in the lead it looks like- JB
  24. Hmm, I think that's a C-..... (congratulations?) You Passed 8th Grade Geography http://images.blogthings.com/couldyoupass8thgradegeographyquiz/pass.jpg Congratulations, you got 7/10 correct! Could You Pass 8th Grade Geography? http://www.blogthings.com/couldyoupass8thgradegeographyquiz/
  25. I like it, tastes good (kind of nutty) and is very soluble, more than rice or soy I think. I like that it is not an isolate and has some vitamins. It's a bit more expensive than rice (per gram of protein), but it is organic, and I found it for 11.46/lb + shipping here- Strange that they don't offer 2 or 5 lb bottles- http://www.vitaminwarehouse.com/shop/detail.cfm/sku/42612/rfr/PRG Anyway, thanks to you all for the tip on this new vegan food- JB
