  6. Michelle of the herbivore store http://www.herbivoreclothing.com/index.html highyly recommned that i eat at nuthshell when i was in portland earlier this week and I'm glad she did IT WAS DELISH i got.. Poblano-sorrel fundido with hundred grain flatbread Salad Micro w/Pink peppercorn dressing Shot of Soup- Creamy French lettuce & chervil with lemon, served chilled Stew- Locro de verduras - Argentine highland grain stew with hominy, stewed grains, peaches, native potatoes, market vegetables & fried plantains, seasoned with cumin and cayenne Pone - Jamaican coconut corn pudding with nutmeg, raisins, grilled pineapple, passion fruit butter, brown sugar sherbet ended up being 29 dollars for just myself, but then again i went overboard but it was alllll sooooo gooooddd! but there is definetly cheaper ways to do things ( no appetizer or salad or shot of soup or desssert , probably just go for one of the larger entrees and your about 11-13? and youlll be full) note -=CASH ONLYY
  7. Vegenaise + Banannas = Banannaise!!!! mix them up in a blender or food processor and whola!! a condiment so gross it has to be good?? ANYWAY I haven't made this but i just enjoy the word combo, BUTTT the first person who comes up with a good recipe (w pics!) using banannaise will recieve a "Fuck Ya'll I'm From Texas" shirt- so that you can (ironically?) wear it around your town. pics of people eating bannaise sandwhiches (just bread and banannaise) would also be cool!! ( btw truth be told my friend jason came up with this word combo)

  11. forum meet-up sounds awesome! right now im at the brownsville public library during lunch break on our way to an organic farm. I'll be in portland saturday night, so anytime before tuesday morning I'd love to meet up or whathaveyou. just let me know (may not be able to get online again till portland?) In eugene i ate at pizza reseach institute and got the p3 (pear, potatoa, pesto ) pizza and it was awesome!!. also really enjoyed sundance natural foods (awesome seitan mole + almond tahini tempeh and a few raw things) and also went to the sweet life bakery/cafe every night..loved it there. had coconut bliss for the first time-very tasty.
  12. has anyone read both of the books? I have the thrive diet and was wondering if it would be worth it to get the first book (thrive) as well- or is it basically the same info just expanded. i think i've seen some of the old recipes from it and they seem like they don't fit in with some of the ideas of the updated thrive diet...like using tofu and whatnot?
  13. made the sunflower beet pizza tonight (recommend!) and just tired out something that really helps alot for the creamy nutritional yeast sauce. It just calls for 1/2 cup of sunflower seeds, but when you put those in the sauce it doesn't do much other than add a crunch every now and then, BUT tonight I group up the sunflower seeds in a coffee grinder and then put them in the sauce. MUCH MUCH BETTER! it makes it much more creamy and like melted cheese. also i like to add extra cayenne
  14. o yea and the directions for popping the amaranth didn't quite work for me the first time i tried it in a pan with coconut oil and ended up burning alot mabye ruining a pan and making my parents a little upset when they came hom haha, i've also tried it in a hot air popcorn popper and absolutly nothing happened. After doing a little research on the internet i found http://serendipitouschef.blogspot.com/2006/11/popcorn-of-gods-whb.html which i followed and it turned out great, anywhere here are the directions from that blog. "Heat a small skillet with a lid that fits over high heat until it is very hot. Pour one to two table spoons of Amaranth grain into the skillet, cover immediately with the fitting lid, and begin shaking the pan. The popping should begin within a few seconds. As the popping dies down, and before the popped kernels burn, remove the skillet from the heat and pour the popped grain into a heat proof bowl. Repeat as above to pop as much Amaranth as necessary. Do not crowd the skillet with too much Amaranth each time, or it will steam and not pop. If the Amaranth does not start popping within a few seconds, your skillet was not hot enough (my problem the first time)."
  15. i loved "the thrive diet" and made my transition to vegan way easy. I have tons of energy and don't even feel tired after working out anymore (guess i just need to work harder!!) I don't follow his meal plan specifically or anything but rather adhere to his guidelines, for most of summer (during workdays anyway) I would generallly eat/live this way 7;15-8 Yoga 8-breakfast smoothie (usually a green smoothie) + 4 oz homemade kombucha 11-lunch=large large varied salad with thrive diet salad dressing ( sometimes with quinoa or equal grains thrown in) + piece of fruit 2 -snack-raw energy bar + carrot or celery or other "snacky" veg 3:45-direct fuel bite 4-5 *WORKOUT* 5:15ish-recover drink or pudding 6:30ish dinner with my family (if i didn't make dinner tried to make it as thrive as possible 9ish raw dessert or plantains or a few thrive diet vegetable crackers or fruit +4oz homemade kombucha but anyway I've tried alot of the recipes in the book and here are a few tips that I've made mental notes on -the pancakes usually call for 1 cup of hemp milK + 1 or 3/4 cup water, do not add the water at first, mix everthing together and the slowly add water until you deem it the right consistency. I found that if i add all the water initially the mixture is waaayyy to watery and thin and pretty hard to make pancakes with..but if done this way turn our tasty. -when making direct fuel bites, take then mixture and form it into a rectangle on a plate/cutting borad and then put in freezer for 10 minutes. it will harden up and make it incredddiblly easier to cut into tiny little bites to be wrapped up. Also using fresh dates instead of dried ones makes it less messy as well, I would recommend fresh dates for all recipes and dried dates in general though as well. -the creamy pepper soup is delishhh!!...but I found it hard to like the ginger carrot one. -the energy bars are best when chunkier (don't overprocess) -all the cracker recipes (sans vegetable crackers) don't make very many and would probably benefit from doubling the recipe so it doesnt get to thin on the outside and burning (haven't tried this yet, but will next time) -creamy nutritional yeast sauce takes way more than 5 minutes to get close to melted cheese consistency, but if you don't put all the water in it cuts down on time till it gets to "melted" consistency, these are just some liner notes i would add but i reallly love this book and try to make everyone i know read it. Post some more if i remember them.
  16. hah not as much as I want. This summer I've been biking to work ( 7 miles roundtrip i think) 5 days a week and then on saturday usually go out and do a 3 hours or so road ride, I don't know the mileage on that thou...EDIT ...probably somwhere around 45 miles-ish range.
  17. loveliberate- heh i'm gonna be in portland the 18-21ish and would love a donut!
  18. Hi guys! Im going to be going on a SEIM bike tour (http://democracybike.com/) of Oregan from the 11th-18th and I have a bit of downtime in Eugene (10-11th) and a bit more in Portland (night of 18th- mid 21st) and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of superawesome things to do. I know that there are tons of vegan/(raw?) eateries, So mabye your even your suggested dish at a certain place? I'm going to be staying at the Hawthorne Hostel ( http://portlandhostel.org/index.html) in portland and the Eugene International Hostel ( http://eugenehostel.com/index.html) so as far as location if that makes a difference of things being closer to me? thanks in advance! -ben
  19. Me! Hi, my names ben and I've only "offically been vegan" for about a month now, but I was vegetarian for the past two years and had slowly been making the vegan transition since febuaray and then read "the thrive diet" in the beginning of summer and fully switched in july. {EDIT} I've also really gotten into raw foods over the summer and have been experimenting on my family with raw dinners and whathaveyou, probably around 70-75%ish raw intake now. As far as training I been into fitness for a while but didn't get more serious about it until this year. In the long run I'd like to start doing triathalones/marathons but for right now I lift 3 days a week (2 muscle groups a workout + alternating abs) and then on the other days run or swim or bike. Im pretty small frame. (5'4 1/2 and 115-118ish pounds) and I'd like to mabye put on 5 pounds of muscle but am more interested in just becoming a better athlete. Hmm lets see...I go to school at St. Edwards University in Austin, TX- which is pretty much the veg mecca of Texas so thats pretty nifty. I also help run http://urbanpollution.com/ -which I'd love for anyone to check out if they so wish. looking forward to learning from all of you!
