  1. Could anyone familiar with travel in these areas give me some feedback on my itinerary? Here’s the (tentative) plan: Fly into Copenhagen (stay 3 days) Overnight ferry to Oslo (stay 1 day) Train to Bergen (stay 2 days) Fly to Helsinki for vegan week ( !) (6 days) Ferry to Tallin (stay 1 day) Ferry back to Helsinki (stay 3 days) Ferry to Stockholm (stay 5 days) Fly home out of Stockholm Any suggestions or advice? Do you think I’m trying to cram too much into a 3-week timeframe, and if so what would you recommend leaving out? I'm not too concerned about seeing all the touristy stuff; when I travel I really just like walking around, exploring, observing, reading and eating tasty vegan food (although with the sad state of the US dollar I'll probably stick mainly to supermarkets, lol). I'm really looking forward to this trip. I appreciate any advice or insight anyone can offer. Thanks!
  2. Just ordered two tubes. Thanks for posting this Troy!
  3. Where to start . . . Dagoba chocolate bars french fries chips and salsa soy decadent peanut butter zigzag ice cream dolmas red wine spanish olives spanish almonds sweet potato french fries veggie sushi rolls amy's cheeseless pizza amy's non-dairy burritos with salsa panang curry with tofu and vegetables Yum.
  4. LOL I TRIED that and it was actually pretty good. With dry oatmeal, not cooked. It was something like dry oatmeal, mustard, and a little bit of apple cider vinegar . . . sounds terrible but I really liked it. If I wasn't about to go grab something at the Spiral Diner (yum ) I'd have some right now. I'm off work today. It's nice.
  5. Randall (darthvegan) was nice enough to let me crash on his futon when I went to Portland for the vegan holiday festival last year. Besides being a really cool person and a lot of fun to hang out with, he has a great apartment. There are two huge picture windows in his living room, and every morning I woke up to this amazing view. AND there are 2 vegan restaurants (that I know of) within walking distance, including a vegan pizza parlor. I'm seriously getting jealous just thinking about it. I should move to Portland.
  6. Congratulations, that's so cool! My little brother (who is also vegan) just graduated with a degree in Radio TV and Film, with a minor in journalism, and he's looking for work right now, too. I'll send him this thread for some motivation. Again, congratulations! And I'm sure your article is great.
  7. Preface: I am in no way qualified to give medical advice and know very little about ADHD. That said, I have read that taking 5g of creatine daily has been shown to significantly improve working memory in vegetarians and vegans. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2003/08/030813070944.htm Might be worth trying if you're not arlready doing so. I'd read up on it, though, to make sure it's safe to take that dose consistently. I know that most people cycle on and off of it when taking it for bodybuilding purposes. Also, how organized are you at work? ie do you make to-do lists, check things off as you go, keep your workspace organized, etc? I ask because these things don't come naturally to me (at all; I'm a total scatterbrain, lol), BUT when I make myself stay organized I find I'm much more efficient at work. I wish I could be more help. I miss DV !
  8. Well, crap. I've learned a lot from your posts and will miss having you on the forum!
  9. Court costs and the cost of the appeals process usually make capital cases more expensive than non-capital cases. Because of this, it's actually cheaper to keep someone in a maximum security single cell for 40 years than to carry out the death penalty. http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/FactSheet.pdf Anyway, this article is really sad. This is the part I thought was most disturbing: "If convicted the illegal immigrant could face life in prison, a $50,000 fine ,or both. Whether he ever serves anytime behind bars will be up to the judge who if he places him on probation, could deport him." A fine??????? For raping a 10 year old girl????????? This guy should be locked up for the rest of his life. Deportation would be a huge mistake, as he would either continue to do this in his own country or find his way back to the U.S. and re-offend. The immigration issue aside, it is tragic that someone who commits this kind of crime could get off with probation or a fine.
  10. I don’t believe in the death penalty, primarily because I don’t think the government should have the power to kill. Those who can afford good legal counsel receive the death penalty less often than those who can’t. And those whose victims are white receive the death penalty more often than those whose victims are minorities. I don’t lean completely to the left on every issue, but in my opinion the death penalty is a barbaric, outdated practice and the sooner we do away with it the better. I don’t think the recidivism rate is any higher for those who get life in prison without parole than for those who are lethally injected.
  11. I agree with everyone else, Dr. Pink. You really need to wear a helmet. I work in a rehab hospital and it's incredibly sad to see people with brain injuries that could have been prevented. If you PM me your address I'll send you one. Can't promise it'll be hot pink, though .
  12. Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in for a second. Melissa's a fantastic trainer; I did her online program and would recommend it to anyone. She is really intense and doesn't screw around, so you've got to be dedicated, but like Danielle said, she is always there to help you get back up if/when you veer off track. I have had a couple of run-of-the-mill omni trainers in the past who looked at me like I was from Mars when I told them I was vegan. It was GREAT to have a trainer who understands not just what a vegan is, but also how to build muscle on a vegan diet. I also really appreciated how much time she dedicated to the program, especially given how reasonable the prices are.
  13. I finally went clipless and it's great. Three long rides and at least so far I haven't forgotten to unclip when stopping. A couple of close calls, though, lol. I went with Shimano mtn bike shoes and Time Atacs (I wanted to be able to wear the same shoes on my road and mtn bikes). Thanks everyone for all your advice and encouragement. I can't believe I stayed in those toe cages so long; clipless is so much better.
  14. That fight was great. I couldn't help feeling bad for the other guy, especially after getting kneed in the face. Mac Danzig is such a great fighter. SO cool that he's vegan.
  15. Mac Danzig is awesome. I'll definitely be watching this tomorrow night.
  16. Those are cool, Tasha. Very inspiring.
  17. Holy crap. This guy has probably dropped dead since writing his "article." LOL, that's funny.
  18. Laura

    Work sucks

LOL, I have actually BEEN to a vegan commune in Costa Rica. Okay it was more of a backpacker's retreat than a commune. But it was definitely vegan. I spent five months in Costa Rica and I loved it. I've been wanting to go back for a long time, and was thinking of going this November or December. If anyone is interested in a mini vegan vacation (rainforest edition) I would be happy to step up as organizer. http://www.wildnatureimages.com/ManuelAntonioPhotos.htm
  19. Definitely. Sorry I bit your head off. I was assuming you knew Phillipe was gay and that you'd read all the stuff on the page with the rave picture (which, btw Phillipe, is not a bad picture at all; I agree with Marcina and think it is really cute). Now things make more sense; there was definitely a miscommunication. I just thought you were being a big jerk and my fuse has been kind of short. I should really take up yoga.
  20. I can't hear anything either but this is classic, lol. Thanks for posting it. I used to love Change of Heart. I'm sort of depressed that you said it was staged, though. I knew it!
  21. Good point. In some contexts, I think this is a more effective way to reduce overall animal suffering and environmental impact than and all-or-nothing approach. Some people are just apathetic about animals and the environment. For example, the vast majority of my co-workers. They're not uninformed, they just don't care. They know just enough to know they don't want to know any more. But they DO care about their health, and I've gotten some of them to trade in cow's milk for soymilk and hamburgers for veggie burgers, etc. They're more open to trying those things because I hide my disdain for their meat eating ways. They don't feel that I'm judging them or trying to sell them a vegan lifestyle, which would make most of them run in the other direction.
