  1. I did horrible in college right out of high school. It wasn't until about 5 years later, after working full time, that I went back to school. It was a totally different experience. I think after you do the 8-to-5 grind for awhile, you appreciate school & learning just for the sake of learning. For the first time in my life, I studied cuz I was truly interested in the topic, not just to pass a test. Of course, after college, I just got back into the grind again. Aurovon, a semester or two out in the 'real world' might give you a refreshing perspective.
  2. Welcome Niels! Your conclusion of vegetarianism to veganism is right on!
  3. Hmmmmm, I look like Glen Miller, Christian Slater & Quentin Tarentino. . . . Was there a place to select gender that I missed? on edit: I found it! Courtney Love, Annette Bening, Shirley Temple
  4. No electronic voting; no electronic tabulation. Get corporations out of our political process!! === on edit: This group is not going to give up their hold on power without a fight. I believe, if we want our country back, we're going to have to endure some ugly times.
  5. The only perfect vegan is a dead vegan. A critical point, IMO, Neil! I think many people assume vegans are self-righteous. Attitudes like the above only confirms it for them. Once that happens, it's almost impossible to get them to open their minds to the message. I agree, 9nines. I too, will probably not have cats again. Bunnies are very nice & veggie, too!
  6. Warmer Seas Will Wipe Out Plankton, Source of Ocean Life by Steve Connor Published on Thursday, January 19, 2006 by the Independent / UK snip... The microscopic plants that underpin all life in the oceans are likely to be destroyed by global warming, a study has found. Scientists have discovered a way that the vital plankton of the oceans can be starved of nutrients as a result of the seas getting warmer. They believe the findings have catastrophic implications for the entire marine habitat, which ultimately relies on plankton at the base of the food chain. The study is also potentially devastating because it has thrown up a new "positive feedback" mechanism that could result in more carbon dioxide ending up in the atmosphere to cause a runaway greenhouse effect. Scientists led by Jef Huisman of the University of Amsterdam have calculated that global warming, which is causing the temperature of the sea surface to rise, will also interfere with the vital upward movement of nutrients from the deep sea. These nutrients, containing nitrogen, phosphorus and iron, are vital food for phytoplankton. If the supply is interrupted the plants die off, which prevents them from absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. more... Microscopic plankton comes in animal and plant forms. The plants are known as phytoplankton. They lie at the base of the marine food chain because they convert sunlight and carbon dioxide into organic carbon - food for everything else. Smaller animals such as shrimp-like krill feed on plankton and are themselves eaten by larger organisms, from small fish to the biggest whales. Without phytoplankton, the oceans would soon because marine deserts. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/0119-01.htm === Wouldn't it be ironic if our 'pinnacle of creation' conceit leads to the destruction of one of the lowest links in the food chain and reverberates back up to us.
  7. Thanks Jonathan! That sounds like a good routine. I will try it. Will, thanks for the reminder that I should shake things up now & then! I get in a rut & do the same old thing time after time.
  8. Courtney! I don't know how I missed your post, but welcome! My husband has been doing yoga everyday for over 30 years. He is the most flexible person I know of any age!
  9. It's just temporary -- next couple of weeks I'll be away from my workout equipment on Fri, Sat & Sun. No 90 minute sessions for me -- about 30 minutes per session is all I do.
  10. Simply amazing!! I can't believe he does this without gloves -- yikes! I like where he's getting chased by the dog. Looks like a great new event for the Olympics!
  11. Wolves are such beautiful creatures. It is so sad how we demonize them. Has anyone seen that wolf special -- can't remember the name or the name of the photographer who was in it. He lives in the Montana wilderness specifically so he can get to know the wolves in his area & get great shots of them. I was so moved viewing the special & his insights & observations of the wolf community. Very intelligent, caring animals. And so majestic. Thank you Daniel for sharing this & for the work your organization did in helping this come about! ===== "I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it's such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her." —Ellen DeGeneres
  12. If you're working out alternate muscle groups, does it hurt to work out 3-4 days in a row? Say days 1 & 3 I do one group & days 2 & 4 I do another group.
  13. I love a good joint on a Friday night. Knock back 3 quick shots of tequila, smoke a joint -- oh my -- the perfect high -- well second to looking great, that is! Now if I could just find a dealer!
  14. Ohhh, I'm going to look for those. When I was a kid, we grew pinto beans on the farm one year & I would eat them raw. My mother thought I was nuts, but I thought they were pretty good.
  15. I was thinking about you yesterday & if you had sore muscles. Unfortunately, they actually asked me to do some work at my job so my internet time was limited! Yes a great workout really revs you up, doesn't it. It's a high that stays with you all day & puts a bounce in your step. Good work, Phoenix!!
  16. I can't do anything on an empty stomach. Even a brisk walk will drain me. It took me awhile to find the perfect morning fuel. Some ideas that work for me: >protein shake made with soy milk & 1/2 banana >protein shake made with oj & 1/2 banana >green shake made with soy milk & 1/2 banana (green as in one of those green powder meals that you mix with liquid) >handful of dried fruit mixed with raw nuts & a cup of coffee I find if I have not properly fueled my body I am at risk for injuring myself, but if I overeat, like you, I feel lethartic. Experiment & find what works for you.
  17. I don't think my husband would agree, Richard!
  18. http://www.followyourheart.com/images/cheese/nutrition_cheddar.jpg Hmmm, The fat content is high, but I don't see that the other ingredients are all that bad. I think most people on this site know that these types of products should be eaten in moderation. You gotta have a treat now & then, ya know. That said, I do make a really good vegan cheeze sauce with cashews, roasted peppers & some other stuff. Not quite as close to cheese flavor as Follow Your Heart, but still, very good.
  19. Working out on the way-cool new rack you got & reading afterwards? Let me know what you think about Skinny Bitch.
  20. I love Follow Your Heart cheese. Liz, you have to heat it pretty hot to get it to melt better. Under a broiler is the best way, imo. Also, it freezes very well & I found you can shred the frozen block just fine, so I now keep mine in the freezer, cuz once you open the package, it goes bad fast -- faster than real cheese. I have loved making Vegan Madre's pizza recipes with it. One of my fave meals is 1/2 a baked potatoe with some chili beans on top & a sprinkling of vegan cheese. Very filling, very cheap! Kathryn, have you asked your grocer to special order it? If you provide them with the UPC code I've found my grocer very open to special ordering. In this case, however, I'm fortunate that my local HFS carries it. If you'd like to try, I will get the codes for you.
