  22. I've been taken this supplement (Cordyceps) for a couple of months.. In two weeks I notice a huge different in my endurance.. here's some more information on this magic pill.. I hope this helps you too Many people underestimate the amount of adaptation that the body must make in response to the demands that triathletes place on their bodies. The adrenal glands help your body to adapt to stress by producing cortisol which will facilitate the production of energy from protein and fat in the body. Regular intense training will require the adrenals to secrete cortisol, and if there is excessive training or other unusual amounts of stress (mental, emotional, environmental) the adrenals can become fatigued. Stressful events (including races) can push an athlete in a state of hypoadrenalism which can compromise the immune system. Many athletes can get sick after a race, a hard training week or in response to stressful life events. If the body cannot handle the stress many symptoms can develop including: backaches, chronic inflammation, allergies, infections, sleeping difficulties, fatigue and digestive disturbances. If the body stays in a state of hypoadrenalism for an extended period of time, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and other degenerative conditions can result. Proper rest, nutrition, and supplementation can allow the body to perform more effectively and help to keep the adrenal glands healthy and strong. There are many herbs that have been used in traditional Chinese medicine and naturopathic medicine to help supplement adrenal function and assist the body in adapting to stress. They are known as adaptogenic herbs and they help with energy metabolism, stamina, endurance, immune support, muscle development, cardiovascular strength, respiratory function, and an ability to adapt to environmental stress. Almost all successful elite level athletes incorporate adaptogenic herbs and supplements in their training regimes. Many Olympic champions attribute some of their success to the advice of Chinese medicine and naturopathic doctors. There are many excellent adaptogenic herbs which include panax ginseng, suma, astragulus, licorice root, sarsaparilla, and schizandra. In this article, I would like to discuss three of the most powerful and popular adaptogenic herbs – Siberian ginseng, rhodiola, and cordyceps. Studies on Siberian Ginseng, rhodiola and cordyceps have shown measurable improvement in time to exhaustion, peak oxygen volume VO peak, ATP production, C-reactive protein and creatine kinase activity. The edge they provide is also more than just performance enhancement. Adaptogenic herbs can prevent illness and burn out associated with intense training. Simple colds and flus can dash the hopes of even the best trained athletes – and intense training and endurance exercise can suppress the immune system – in particular the activity of T and NK killer cells Cordyceps (Cordyceps Sinensis) In 1993, China's Wan Jun-Sha broke the 10,000 meter world record by an amazing 40 seconds at the World Track and Field meet in Stuttgart, Germany. She was suspected of using illegal steroids because of the huge time improvement. After extensive drug testing, she was cleared, and it was revealed that she was only using cordyceps and other Chinese herbs. Animal studies have shown cordyceps increases the ratio of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to inorganic phosphate (Pi) in the liver by 45-55% - which is beneficial in terms of energy metabolism and the potential for athletic performance enhancement. Mice fed cordyceps and subjected to an extreme low oxygen environment, were able to utilize oxygen more efficiently (30-50% increase), better tolerate acidosis and hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and live 2-3 times longer than a control group. Similar research suggests that cordyceps increases energy by improving blood oxygen utilization by over 40%. A small study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine annual meeting (1999), showed that cordyceps significantly increases maximal oxygen uptake and anaerobic threshold in cyclists, which may lead to improved exercise capacity and resistance to fatigue. Other areas of benefit include increasing SOD (an overall antioxidant) and glutathione activity, strengthening immune function, kidney and adrenal function and improving glucose metabolism. Certain polysaccharides and glycoproteins in cordyceps may also boost energy and reduce fatigue by increasing testosterone levels, which has been observed in numerous studies. In one study, cordyceps increased plasma testosterone levels in mice with low testosterone by almost 170%. Cordyceps dosage: 1 to 3 grams per day for maintenance; 3 to 6 grams per day for optimal effects. Cordyceps products vary greatly in their quality. I recommend Aloha Medicinals and New Chapter cordyceps products. It is essential to buy good quality brands of these herbs. Many poor quality products exist on the market. Price is almost always an indication of quality. Most good health food stores, including Lifestyles Markets carry high quality products. For all adaptogenic herbs, it best to take for 2 months and then to take a break for 2 weeks. Elite athletes, athletes pushing themselves to new levels and distances or beginning athletes will notice the greatest benefits from adaptogens – as they are putting the most stress on their bodies.
