  1. so, for my improv dance class we are supposed to think of a song to improv to, thing is we also have to do other things with the song (such as sing and create a myth based on the song) The song I had in mind is about 7 minutes long (and is kind of crazy, so singing it would be interesting without the music) I am looking for something a bit shorter, any ideas would be great!

    electronic, hip hop, death metal, folk...what did you have in mind?

  2. Glad your acute problem passed. How has your situation improved? Good general advice for almost anyone is to shift most eating toward the morning and midday and allow the gut to rest at night. Also, stress management is important and there are a lot of techniques and strategies for that, such as meditation, yoga, etc. Sprouts as a dietary staple are good for most folks too! Take care.

    I've had 2 more episodes since May. I had more lab work done, and everything came back normal. My physician has no idea whats going on. They diagnosed it as gastroenteritis once again.

  3. Can't offer much in the way of advice based on my own experience of taking off from my comfort zone (still here, so there is no experience to speak of ), but I will say this -

    If you've been miserable for 8 years doing what you do/being where you're at, then by all means, make change your top priority. Life's too freakin' short to hate every day because you're trapped in the same old situation. It may take some time to build up the funds to make a good move where you won't be financially strapped when you relocate (I've known a few people who weren't prepared for the expense and regretted going as soon as they did), but just keep at it, set a time frame and when you get things set, take off and start fresh. If I recall correctly, I chimed in on one of your other threads regarding college (at least, I THINK it was you that had started it), and I definitely made it known that I don't think that higher education is necessary to get ahead and do what you love. Don't let anyone sweat you too much about going back and finishing school and that sort of thing - if it doesn't interest you, don't do it, simple as that. A degree is by no means a guarantee of happiness (or, even a job that you won't hate), so I wouldn't even worry about that. Chase what will make you happy, and you will be happier than you say you are now.

    My best friend I grew up with, who lived here in Milwaukee, got sick of his rut after being passed over for promotion at work for years and realizing that he just wasn't happy here any longer. So, he saved up for a year and put about 4k in the bank, packed everything he had in his car and drove to Miami and never looked back. No job offer, no plans, just took off with enough cash in hand so that he'd be able to make ends meet for a few months until he knew where he'd end up. Says it was the best decision he ever made - the thing is, he didn't move upward in his career when he got there (swapped retail management for inspecting fire safety systems), but the change of weather, people, and everything about his routine made him appreciate things more and he's not the crabby jerk that he appeared to be while living here. All it took was for him to make a change of scenery and be in a place that he thought looked good, and he's had his happiest 7 years of his life since that time. When I ask him about comig back, he says that even though he misses his family and friends from time to time, he wouldn't trade his current state for anything, so it goes to show that for some people, a severe shaking of the bag can be a good thing.

    Just be sure to prepare adequately for the journey ahead and I'm sure you're going to feel great once you change things up in the future!

    Thanks mate. After hearing these sort of things I become more confident that I can stop thinking about this, and make it happen.

  4. I'm really hoping to visit portland in october for a few days. I need to start gathering some thoughts as to what I want to see/do. I've also been considering austin, phoenix, denver, vancouver, salt lake, i guess anywhere in the west.

  5. But life is too short to be miserable. Decide, and go!

    Exactly. I'de love to work in animation, cartooning, or comics. Anything along those lines. I've done web/graphic design for years so I guess that could also be an option.

    I'm also very interested in coffee. I've taken a few barista training courses. Ideally, I'd like to work in a coffee shop, and also be able to make art, stay fit, and not be totally miserable. Seems like Portland or somewhere out west would be well suited for that.

  6. I'll try to keep this brief. Im in need of a drastic change. I've wasted the last 8+ years of my life working a meaningless job that has seriously taxed my mental and physical well being. I despise having to wake up every day knowing that I'm condemned to 8 hours of brainless multitasking, and idiot conditioning. I feel like I have to do something now, or I'll end up a lifer at this place. I know, boo hoo, right.

    Unless you aspire to be a neurosurgeon - in my opinion - school is a scam, and far too expensive. I had a go at some college, and went to art school for a year, but didn't finish either. So, money being the issue I thought I should save up, and try to move somewhere. But, I have no idea where to begin. Everyone keeps telling me

    "just go for it - book a flight, and split". What about income, a place to live, what if I hate it, etc.

    Basically, I'm just looking for some input on how to get things rolling.

  7. I modified this recipe from susan's blog

    Thick n Sweet Split Pea Soup

    1 large onion, chopped

    2 cloves garlic, minced ( I used elephant garlic, and a garlic press )

    1 large carrot, chopped

    1 cup dried split peas, make sure to rinse well

    5 cups water

    1 large yam, chopped

    1 teaspoon dried basil

    1 teaspoon dried thyme

    2 teaspoons of italian seasoning

    red pepper flakes and/or cayenne to taste (optional)

    * these measurements are only guidelines - I rarely measure when seasoning. I usually add things as I go. So don't be afraid to play around here *

    2 teaspoons salt (or to taste)

    freshly ground black pepper, to taste

    Coat the bottom of a pot with a thin layer of oil. Saute the onions until they turn translucent. Add the carrots, and garlic cook for a few minutes.

    Add the peas along with 5 cups of water. Stir in the yam, and seasoning (minus the salt and pepper)

    Bring this to a boil, cover, and simmer on low heat for about 1.5 to 2 hours. The peas should break down, and become soft.

    If you like your soup thinner you can always add water. I wanted to try it a bit thicker so after the peas became soft, and almost disintegrated I uncovered the pot, and continued to cook it for about 10 minutes. It came out really thick - almost the consistency of hummus.

    At this point give it a taste, and season with salt, and pepper.

  8. Each serving has 330 mg of sodium and is made of processed soy protein. Tofu or tempeh would be a much healthier choice as they are minimally processed compared to these strips (and the ingredient list is much shorter). If you don't care for faux meat then I wouldn't waste my money on them.

    That's what I was thinkin'. Thanks for the reassurance.

  9. I make them similar to brendan's:

    Chocolate Blueberry Energy Bars

    * 1 cup fresh or soaked dried dates

    * 1/4 cup almonds

    * 1/4 cup blueberries

    * 1/4 cup roasted carob powder (or cacao to make 100% raw)**

    * 1/4 cup ground flaxseed**

    * 1/4 cup hemp protein**

    * 1/4 cup unhulled sesame seeds**

    * 1 tsp fresh lemon juice

    * 1/2 tsp lemon zest

    * Sea salt to taste

    * 1/2 cup frozen blueberries

    I change a few things up:

    1 cup fresh or soaked dried dates

    2 Massive Tablespoons of Gemma

    2 TB Oats

    1/4 cup any fruit ( I like frozen cherries, and blueberries )

    1 TB Ground Flax

    Juice from 1/2 Lemon

    1/2 tsp lemon zest

    Sea salt to taste

    Pinch of Vanilla

    Pinch of Cinnamon

    Depending on the flavor im going for i'll add almonds, raisins, cranberries, dried apples, etc.

    I process all the dry ingredients first - set aside. Then do all the wet. Add the dry ingredients to the wet after they are processed, and form a thick paste.

    Slap it down on a piece of wax paper, and flatten it a bit. Use your hands to form a rectangle, square, decahedron, whatever. I then cut them into small chunks, wrap them in foil, toss them in a zip top bag, and store them in the freezer.

  10. Steaz is ok, but NOTHING COMPARES TO......

    AMAZON ENERGY (by Sambazon)

    http://www.sambazon.com/nutrition/amazonEnergy.jpg

    Best taste, all organic content. The boost is provided by reasonable amounts of yerba mate, green tea extract (Steaz brand), and guarana. Also, they are CHEAP, $1.50-$2.00 and twice as large as most tiny-ass organic energy drinks. I'm surprised someone didn't already post this. After one or two of these, I usually have to go out back to smash concrete and scream.

    I've had those before, and I really wanted to like it. I don't think they taste very good. Maybe i'll give them another chance.

  11. This is the third time since march this has happened. Same exact symptoms as before: horrible cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. If I haven't been on the pot I've been in bed - since sunday. I saw my physician once again who ran more blood work, and ct scans. Luckily this time no hospital visit due to dehydration...must have been the coconut water.

  12. My smoothies give me a noticable increase in energy.

    Anything more noticable than the energy from sugar, like that from a red bull etc, is unnatural, & unhealthy.

    What do you need such a boost for anyway?

    I'm usually completely drained when I get home from work - which makes for a not so great workout.

  13. These drinks really concern me.I used to drink redbull cos I liked the taste but then I realised how full of crap it was.

    If you want energy, blend 5 portions of fruit up with some soy protein powder.That stuff will have you bouncing off the walls, plus your body loves you for it!

    I hear a lot of people talk about fruit for evergy. That doesn't cut it for me. Those steaz energy drinks are about the only thing I've had that gave me a kick in the ass. Redbull never did it for me either - I just like the taste.
