pharmakon
I'm going to San Francisco mid-March, besides the main attractions (golden gate, etc) what shouldn't be missed? Looking for the best vegan restaurants, good hiking/outdoors, great photos, etc. I'll be using public transportation, but am happy to travel an hour on the rail to get to a great spot. Thanks. Veganluv
So much to do there!I'm into nature photography so I love going to Golden gate park it is great with the Conservatory of Flowers, Botanical Garden & Japanese tea gardens. Next to the academy of science. They are all great to check out! Most folks end up at the wharf , china town, japan town-etc... If you have never been to the redwoods you must check out muir woods redwoods very close to san fran. 16 miles, maybe around 25 mins north. My fav vegan places to eat in San Franwww.millenniumrestaurant.comwww.herbivorerestaurant.comhttp://cafegratitude.com/
Vegan Joe
You can start out at the "Center of the hippie revolution" "Haight Ashbury".And walk from one end of Golden Gate Park to the other, and walk right across the highway onto the sand (beach) and put your toes in the Pacific Ocean. If you grow tired just go north or south and you're out of the park shortly and you can jump onto a bus easy enough. It's a great hike. Lombard is San Francisco's "Crookedest" Street

Yes, it's the most expensive vegan restaurant I've been to. The one and only time I went there was a special occasion.
lobsteriffic
Never been, but I've heard Millennium is AMAZING. Okay this probably sounds lame, but if you go to Alcatraz, go on one of the evening tours. You get to see extra stuff that way (as opposed to the daytime tours). I thought it was really neat when I was there in 2007.
chrisjs
Millenium is really great. Definitely worth the price if you only go once. Not too expensive compared to the upscale vegan restaurants here in Manhattan. You can also try MaggieMudd for ice cream and Golden Era Vegetarian Restaurant for Chinese. If you want to go to Alcatraz be sure to book it early. We didn't and weren't able to get any tickets on short notice.

I have a feeling this is going to be a week of eating. We're in the same town, nearly, by the way. I'm at rutgers in new brunswick. thanks for the help. Veganluv
If you go to Millennium Restaurant the best starter to try is the:Sesame Cornmeal Crusted Oyster Mushroomssweet & spicy apple-pepper jam, shaved onion & radish salad- yum! Also if you want to eat with a view go to Greens- it vegetarian but lots of vegan options.http://www.greensrestaurant.com/ There is a very inexpensive vegan restaurant: Shangri-La Chinese Kinda small & typical Chinese restaurant decorIt is Kosher Vegan at 2026 Irving Street(between 21st Ave & 22nd Ave) They have a lot of unusual vegan mock meat dishes if you like that - dont be shocked if you think it tastes like chicken (lol) Because it is Kosher it is always packed full of Hasidic jews- (fun experience) I agree with chrisjsfor good vegan ice cream http://www.maggiemudd.com/default.asp Have fun! Saulo
Ike's Place, every sandwich they make can be made vegan as long as you say "VEGAN" and for dessert walk for a little bit down to Castro St and have gelato at Naia. Also Golden Era is one of my favorite vegan spots in the wooooorld they have similar dishes to Shan-gri-la Sub-Mission between 17th and 18th on mission has a lot of hardcore and punk shows, keep an eye on their calender. You should explore Valencia st and grab one of the best vegan burritos ever at Mariachi's and be sure to hit up some bars on the weekend; I know I would if I was
Vegan Joe
Don't forget to bring a warm jacket. Some days it beauteous, sometimes SF can be one cold place, even in the middle of the summer.
MikayP
since you said you would like hiking i would highly suggest you go to the Marin Headlands, its just across the Golden Gate Bridge and has beautiful...beautiful views
AHealthyVegan
You have to check out Café Gratitude. There are several locations in the San Francisco area. My wife and I went there during our honeymoon in 2007 and it was one of the most amazing meals we have ever had. They are a raw food restaurant, the atmosphere is great and the food is unbelievably good.

Vegan Joe
I forgot, but I though I got mine at Safeway Super Market. I've had it I for several years now. I also think you can get them at Walgreens. Correct me if I'm wrong as to where they can buy one. Not sure if the front cover of the schedule is still same picture.http://i45.tinypic.com/2eozals.jpg You can fold it and put it in your back pocket.http://i50.tinypic.com/1675jdi.jpg It's a bus route map like the one in this link. Will come in handy http://transit.511.org/static/providers/maps/SF_123200991008.pdf^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Adena
Herbivore is really affordable and has a pretty large menu, so I ended up there three times on my recent vacation. I'm kicking myself for not trying Maggie Mudd's. That would have been awesome!
