  1. Hey, watch it if you like but just know that none of the people in a real ER ever look that good (I'm referring to the live actors of course).
  2. I should have an answer for you since I always get a Swedish massage when given a choice, but I don't. I just know it's the one that feels best! Anyway, I googled it and got a lot of different answers. We like things that sound exotic here in the U.S.
  3. The site has had that unwarranted criticism numerous times. However, if you actually visit it you will discover that it is run by volunteers from different science and medical fields - not the FDA or pharmaceutical companies. I understand that you are a big believer in laetrile because you believe it has helped your mother. I hope that she stays well. However, there are many reasons for cancer to go into remission, to re-emerge and to disappear - and they're most likely too complex for us to understand at this time, indeed if ever. I wouldn't trumpet laetrile or vitamin B17 as a cure any more than I would call chemotherapy a cure. They're all just options and they're all of dubious worth.
  4. Please read this very informative report from Quackwatch - Your Guide to Quackery, Health Fraud, and Intelligent Decisions. Laetrile and Vitamin B17 have been making rounds on the snake oil circuit for decades. http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/Cancer/laetrile.html
  5. And correlation does not equal cause. Please let's be very careful about dispensing and/or following highly debatable nutritional suggestions online. Some nutrional opinions make their rounds on different forums and websites without sound research to back them up. Just a suggestion.
  6. I'll answer what I can. You need a passport to travel to Canada, no visa necessary. If you are traveling from Portland to Vancouver and are considering traveling by train, then here is a good resource. (It's $84 for a roundtrip ticket, 3.5 hours to Seattle with a layover then 3.75 hours to Vancouver): http://www.ehow.com/how_2025079_train-portland-vancouver.html http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage If going by bus, then try this link (It's over $90 for a roundtrip ticket and takes 8 hours or longer): http://www.greyhound.com/home.asp Unless you truly prefer traveling by bus, I would take the train. But I've had some really bad bus experiences. The train ride will certainly have much nicer scenery, unless you consider highway travel with thousands of smog-belching SUVs to be scenic. I haven't taken the train on this coast, however train travel is much nicer than bus travel on the east coast. It appears that you can pick up tickets at the station rather than have them mailed to you. Hopefully, someone who lives in Chicago or Vancouver will be able to help you with the dangerous areas. Overall, Vancouver is safer than Chicago in my experience. Happy travels.
  7. Good point Crashnburn. The infant was 6 weeks old - too young to have eggs, dairy or meat. All infants are meant to be vegan as they're meant to subsist on human milk (which is not "dairy"). I caught a glance at a headline in a Peolple magazine at an airport today "Did This Baby Die From A VEGAN DIET?" What a bunch of irresponsible BS reporting, if you can call it that. If the parents had been Kosher would we see a headline "Did this baby die from a Kosher Diet? What a sad story that only leads to more misinformation regarding vegans.
  8. Great pictures! I like the last one best. Hope you'll post the deleted one when you're able.
  9. Thanks for your replies. Nice work, Kjtten. I hope I can do the same.
  10. I am very jealous of all of you. I'm currently in Maryland, surrounded by bugs and humidity and a surprisingly well-stocked grocery store. Please have a great time for me!
  11. Thanks for the update despite your exhaustion. My husband and I visit the east coast a few times each year and we are considering visiting during your competition. Would that be okay? I would love to see you compete. If you don't want to give details on this thread, could you pm me and give me the details? Thanks!
  12. I'm up for going any time after the next 2 weeks. I'll be in touch. We can then review whether it would be a good exhibit to suggest to those on vacation (I'm sure it will be).
  13. I believe this exhibit will still be in town during the vacation. I am definitely planning on attending. http://www.omsi.edu/visit/featured/bodyworlds/
  14. But it will be welcome with me!!! It's very strange being away from the east coast - I find myself really missing some of the typical "east coast" interactions while I don't miss others at all.
  15. If for any reason my trip gets cancelled this week, I will help out. But don't count on it. Someone should really help Robert - I had a lot of fun at the Vegan Holiday Festival.
  16. Thanks for the replies. I looked at some of the reviews of his books on amazon.com but I was really interested in whether anyone here has had good results following his advice. Most of the reviews were good.
  17. I have been following the training suggestions from "Championship Bodybuilding" by Chris Aceto, copyright 1999. I think he gives a good description of slow twitch/fast twitch muscle fibers and what's needed to make muscle grow. My real concern is that he states "if a woman trains for a year under a good trainer, she could realistically add 5 pounds of muscle." I know personally that this is not true, so I'm wondering if the rest of the book has any glaring misconceptions. I plan on competing next year and am not going to pay for a personal trainer for an entire year (unless any of you know of an awesome one in Portland, OR). I've had trainers over the years and sometimes feel like we're speaking two different languages. The last one said "maybe we won't be able to make you bigger but we can make you stronger." Exactly what I'm not looking for. But back to the book. If any of you have read it, I'd really like to get your opinion.
  18. Very nice picture. PETA will probably crop the picture anyway so perhaps the shoes won't show?
  19. I have one small book called "Sprouts" by Kathleen O'Bannon, CNC by Alive Books. It's fairly thorough and has the nutritional content of many sprouts. She also has recipe ideas. I also have a pamphlet that I got (at Whole Foods or Wild Oats) with a sprouting tray kit. It's titled "Sprouting for Health in the New Millennium" from Living Whole Foods, Inc. It doesn't push its own products too much. Both publications have fairly thorough sprouting charts and directions. Hope that helps.
  20. Great picture!!! I can totally imagine the horror flick scene.
  21. Thanks kjtten - this thread does appear to be rather troll-like. But back to the article. What a bunch of unscientific B.S. I won't even address all of the inconsistencies, disproven theories and outright incorrect information that I read. Between my husband and myself we have a few medical degrees, science degrees and nursing degrees (hey, we really liked school); and we found that article to be hilarious!!!! There were many entertaining parts but our favorite was the example from "House, MD." Using "House, MD" to prove the cause of cancer?!? Too Funny!!!!!! There are millions of asthmatics, smokers and people with heart disease walking around the U.S. at this moment who have had hemoglobin oxygen saturation levels (not O2 blood levels as "House" got wrong, of course) at 94% or less either once or chronically. I assure you that they don't all develop cancer. I'm only going into that example because it's the easiest and most hilarious one for me to remember. In another decade, we'll move onto another isolated dietary or physiological factor being the "essential" cause of some disease. Human physiology is too complex to explain this way. Thanks for adding some humor to my day.
