  1. D'Oh, I just remembered that I never posted about my run on Friday night. A buddy of mine is running the Canada Death Race in a couple weeks. It's a 125km race up in the Rockie mountains. We went for a three hour trail run in the middle of the night, because he'll be doing some tough running in the dark. We got a little bit turned around on the trail, but were never lost. Lots of the terrain was pretty tough in the dark, but there were some runable sections that we really flew along. At the end of the run we took a dip in Meech Lake to clean off.

    Intro

    Welcome to the forums!
  8. This morning I ran about 32km with some fellow ultrarunners. Nice trails, not too hilly, great weather. Our pace varied for quite slow and easy to a faster push towards the end. One of the runners I was with this morning is representing Canada at the World 24-hour Championships this month, and this was her last long run before that race. She's one heck of a runner, and someone that I try to learn from.
  9. I think I'm going to keep posting in this journal for the time being. Yesterday I went for a ~10km run in the afternoon, and this morning I did 9km with Wendy. I'm going to keep weight training to a minimum for the next few weeks, because I need to focus more on my running. Big stuff coming up soon.
  10. Thanks potter. Nuts and dates were at the top of my list. I'm just doubting that I'll be able to eat nothing but that for four days straight. I'm thinking dried fruit as well, but I'm going to want something savoury once in a while. Vega is pretty expensive, so while I might use bars and the drink to supplement what I'm eating, they won't be a main source of calories.
  11. Let's say hypothetically that I was planning to run very long distances on at least four consecutive days, while carrying all my food for the trip on my back. One of the major factors at play will be getting enough total calories to sustain up to ten hours of exercise for several days, while limiting as much as possible the amount of weight that I carry. Of course, I would have to eat food that's tasty, filling, and most importantly the right kind of calories. Any thoughts? What kinds of foods would you eat in this situation?
  12. I've read the book, and I try to follow his general principles as much as possible. I've gone close to 100% Thrive approved for a couple days. Whenever I did, my energy was high and I found that I recovered faster from hard workouts and long runs. Definately something that I'm going to keep doing. Goodluck bunnylalu!
  13. Thanks offense and bunny! It's not often that I place in races, especially such short ones, so this was quite the treat. Yesterday I took it easy. Today I went for an easy paced 5.5km run. I'm not sure what to do with this log now that the contest is over. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to read my journal. According to the thread count, about 40 people have been reading it on a regular basis! I honestly didn't think most of my training was that interesting. Apart from the few of you who posted I don't know who you are, but I'd still like to thank you for reading. I might start a new log now, or maybe just keep this one going. I haven't decided yet. I've got some cool events, races, and workouts planned for the next few months, so I'll definately be sharing them with you.
  14. I hope that it's nothing too serious. Get well soon!
  15. On July 1st Pamela and I ran a 5K race. I was about 20 seconds off my time from two weeks ago (probably because of the workout the day before), but I'm still pleased with my time. I managed to come in third in my age category, out of 7. My time was 22 minutes flat. Here are some pics: The start of the race http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k123/markc7/100_1280.jpg About 3.5 km into the run. http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k123/markc7/100_1281.jpg The last 100m. I beat that kid, but not by much. He's fast for a little guy. http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k123/markc7/100_1284.jpg
  16. Today around 11 I did Thursday's APK Workout of the Day: 20 minutes for rounds of 5 pullups, 10 pushups, 15 squats. I finished with 17 rounds, for a total of 85 pullups, 170 pushups, 255 squats. When I got home I was feeling pumped so I took my final set of pictures for the bodybuilding contest. My quads didn't feel quite as strong as my upper body, so I also did a set of 50 more squats. Man, posing is hard. My hat is off to Robert or anyone else who does bodybuilding competitions!

    Biology?

In the first year of my degree, the biology courses required alot of memorizing species names and especially identifying and labeling specimens. A typical biology lab test in first and second year of my program would have fifty or so stations set up around the lab, where you have two minutes to rotate between stations and answer questions, identify species, describe something, etc. It's a fun challenge but it can be tough if memorization isn't your thing. As for animal testing I never had to do animals tests myself, and that should be fairly easy to avoid with good course selection or talking to the prof. Same with dissections. But I can almost guarantee that you'll still have to look at and memorize dissected animals, even if you didn't disect them yourself. At least at my program, that's just how they teach and test knowledge of animal anatomy.
