  1. The vast majority of form videos I've watched on squats say to go to parallel and no further, but then there are a few people like 4x4 who say that parallel is the most stressful position for your knee and therefore you should pass parallel and it produces better gains anyway.
  2. Good for carbs (which are good for energy), and whole wheat pasta has a good amount of protein in it. That's what I've heard around here.
  3. Next time someone throws one of these lines at you, bring up this release from the American Dietetic Association. The American Dietetic Association (ADA) recently updated and re-released its position paper on vegetarian diets. Among the ADA's findings are that, "appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life-cycle including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence and for athletes." Furthermore, it points out that vegetarians "tend to have a lower body mass index and lower overall cancer rates. Vegetarian diets tend to be lower in saturated fat and cholesterol and have higher levels of dietary fiber, magnesium and potassium, vitamins C and E, folate, carotenoids, flavonoids and other phytochemicals." -peta2 blog
  4. I did a search and found a lot of people recommending a gemma pea/rice/hemp protein mix from trueprotein.com. I'm twiddling* with the ratios and although the gemma has the highest overall protein capacity, it seems like a varied protein would be best for the most complete amino-acid rating. I feel like someone must have looked at these numbers and been able to get some kind of optimal number or at least optimal range. Right now I'm at 50% pea, 30% rice, and 20% hemp, the logic being that I have varied proteins, but more of the types that offer a higher overall concentration. I'm at 22.58grams per 30 grams. Is this good? Does it even matter? *Twi-ddle, (verb), to toy with, pull at. Developed from VeganDrew's girlfriend, originally referencing his obsessive twiddling with his chin hair.
  5. Luck, I'm confused. 3x8 @ 280 of 275?? Did you do 3 sets of 8 with 275lbs or 280lbs. Either way those are impressive numbers for a 135lb fat kid along with your 175lb bench. Damn grrrrrrl you're strong! Yeah I'm gonna go shoot myself now, thanks.
  6. I hate promotion of anorexic, unhealthy-looking and overly self-critical body image. However, I think that takes a huge back seat to the suffering of animals who have no choice in the matter. We should all work to end all suffering and inequality, but honestly if indulging in the oppression of middle/upper class women in an abstract and self-inflicted way will save millions of animals from much worse suffering that is not at all self-inflicted, I'm willing to make that tradeoff.

    Welcome, fellow weakling plant-eater!
  8. Thanks a lot, VeganEssentials. By the way, just warning you: the day I can OHP 225lbs is the day I take the exact same picture as your avatar. Excellent way to mythbust.
  9. I'm just getting into squats, and they're great, but I'm having a few issues and I'd like some clarification. 1. Neck pain. I'm only doing 115-135lbs, but it kinda hurts my neck to rest the bar across my trapezeus muscles; I think tonight I resurrected a sleep-induced pulled muscle from last week. I don't understand how guys can put 300lbs on their necks. Am I doing something wrong? 2. Cardio time. Phew, do I start huffing during a set. That's OK, right?
  10. Welcome and congratulations. I'm sure the aminals appreciate it!
  11. Was totally interested until I saw her pecs were as big as mine. I'm good on that, thanks.
  12. To be fair though, can someone step in and vouch for roughly appropriate (not perfect) nutrient ratios in terms of carbs, proteins, etc? I've heard elsewhere that high protein loads can, under some circumstances, cause kidney and bone problems.
  13. Not in any significant sense. All thoughts are "beliefs" in the sense that we can't know anything for sure, but this is not only a truism, it's completely useless. A distinction is being made between 1) positions weighted with some amount of evidence and 2) positions that lack such evidence. For you to equate all thoughts under "beliefs" is a semantic switcheroo and ignoring the implicit distinction that we (yourself included) all recognize in this argument. And I took Philosophy 101.
  14. I buy a lot of them but I try to keep them on my person as a last resort, when I can't get any other protein supplements. I try not to eat more than 1 per day but I think that's too much with all the sugar, chocolate, and soy. I hear macrobars are better (quoting Paul Shapiro of HSUS- take your problems up with him. ).
  15. Now that this topic is raised I feel it's appropriate to raise a similar one: What does it mean when my feces/urine smell just like my food? Until recently they smelled like pretty generic feces/urine but now I can always remember what I ate because my feces/urine smell just like it. I thought this means I'm not absorbing the nutrients in the food or something, could that be? I'm eating like a horse now, so does that mean I'm passing a lot of the stuff right through?
  16. How about we oppose offensive violence regardless of which invisible people the offender thinks are real?
  17. Bruce Friedrich is a GREAT diplomat to go behind enemy lines. My group arranged for him to speak and 3/4 of the students were agriculture majors, and we were incidentally moved from our original venue to the building Rodney Coronado bombed. Was awkward. We read a few stories in ag journals afterward who quoted attendees that said they exposed Friedrich's doubletalk and called it a success, but PETA got a letter the next day saying a guy went there and then went vegetarian. Considering he was probably the only person on the fence in the audience, I'll let those ag people "win" all the talks they want.
  18. Just what we need to go green: livestock.
  19. Holy shit, this entry is disturbing: DAVID BIENUS: "I volunteer to use Camille [Marino] for the next experiment! ... I will continue to do my job. If you don't like bring your ass over here and do something about it. But be forewarned, people that I work with take very seriously loonies trying to deprive them of their livelihood and there are a lot of woods around here to hide bodies." 20. Finally, something the Israeli government does right.
