  1. I am an absolute smoothie fanatic.. I have 2-3 per day... it's one of the main reasons I spend sooo much of my money on fresh produce! They probably also make up about 80% of my calories for the day..haha.. ok ok.. so, my recipes change every day, depending on what I feel I need nutritionally, but here it what I drank this morning: (note: complete estimations on measurements) 1 1/2 cups Genesis apple juice(fresh, raw) 1 1/2 cups OJ (fresh, raw) 1 1/2 teaspoons of flax seeds(raw) 1 cup marionberries (local, organic, frozen) probably...around, 12 strawberries(fresh, raw) 1 banana(fresh, raw) 1 gigantic Lacinato kale leaf! A few leaves of raw spinach 2 teaspoons raw hemp seed oil 1 mango 4 cubes of ice. All organic ingredients, raw, delicious smoothie! Created about 1.5 liters(exact) of smoothie heaven! I can't believe I drank all of that.... hah also, I change it up all of the time, but I always add spinach or kale. raw oats, hemp protein powder or pea protein powder, flax seeds, sprouted almonds/raw almond butter, avocado, probiotics, vega powder.. the list goes on.... but all very good additions!
  2. I've probably only seen the show Seinfeld once or twice, but I think this is totally funny... enjoy! _______________________ ______________________ Milk Comedy with Jerry, Kramer, George & Elaine The Jerry Seinfeld show was one of the most sucessful sitcoms in television history. Jerry's milk & dairy comments: ________________________________________________ Jerry Seinfeld (to kids): Hey, look at those large animals in the field! Let's go squeeze those things underneath them and then drink whatever comes out. Then, let's take whatever's left over, put it aside for a year or so and - eat it! Kids: Eeeeew! ________________________________________________ Jerry: Isn't it weird that we drink milk, stuff designed to nourish baby cows? How did THAT happen? Did some cattleman once say, "Oh, man, I can't wait till them calves are done so I can get ME a hit of that stuff." ________________________________________________ Jerry: Is that it? Ice cream? George: Thirty-nine years I enjoy my milk products, and now I can only pray for proper digestion. I'm an old man... Jerry: An old and bloated man. Lactose intolerance, the milk-lover's Wile E. Coyote! George: Beep beep. Kramer: I sorta like that full feeling. You know, they oughta make foods with a whole lotta lactose. Pepperoni-and- lactose pizza, lactose sprinkles, stuff like that. George: Are you insane?! Jerry: Jury's still out on that one. Speaking of food, you guys are invited to a barbecue thrown by Elaine and her new boyfriend. George: As long as he's not a dairy farmer. One look at those cows and I'm musical. Kramer: Hey, there's a group for you people, you know. It's called, uh... Lactose Intolerants Anonymous. Yeah, that's it. George: Really? Kramer: The L.I.A. A whole bunch of 'em, they meet every week in that little church on Fifty-Second. Jerry: Sixty cramping people in one tiny room, now there's a situation. ________________________________________________ Jerry: Ever have milk the day after? It scares the hell out of you. ________________________________________________ George: That's okay. That's good. You think Louie Pasteur and his wife had anything in common? He was in the fields all day with the cows, you know with the milk, examining the milk, delving into milk, consumed with milk. Pasteurization, homogenization... ________________________________________________ Kramer: (to George) But what tempts you? You're a portly fellow. A bit long in the waistband. So what's your pleasure? Is it the salty snacks you crave? No no no no...Yours is a sweet tooth. Oh, you may stray, but you'll always return to your dark master...The cocoa bean! And only the purest syrup nectar can satisfy you. If you could, you'd guzzle it by the gallon...Ovaltine!? Hershey's!? Nestle's Quick!? ________________________________________________ Seinfeld's routine as performed on the David Letterman show: Jerry Seinfeld: "I'll tell you what I like about that mad cow disease...I like the fact that we're attempting to blame it on the cows! They are crazy! They are nuts! These cows are out of their minds! Of course the cows are thinking 'Oh yeah? You're drinking me, you're eating me, you're wearing me, you're sneaking up on me and tipping me over.' Yeah, and I'M a little off mentally? That's why we're mad! Maybe it's a good thing. Maybe we'll eat a little less. Everyone in this room is trying to lose a little weight. A little..something. Everyone's trying to lose something. And not one of you is doing it. I'm not doing it. No one is doing it. Not one person is losing weight! Not one! Do you think that a possible explanation could be that we are still trying to find ways to stuff MORE CHEESE into A PIECE OF PIZZA?! We've hollowed out the crust. We hollowed out the crust about 3 years ago. Now we're double-layering the foundation. I understand they have a new thing coming out... They will actually bake your head right into the pizza! Pizza Hut. It's called 'Hey Pizza-Face.' And you wear the pizza and attempt to eat your way out of it." Robert Cohen http://www.notmilk.com
  3. I know of at least 7-10 people I've gotten to sign up for this, there are A LOT of cyclists/runners in the electronic field of work(engineers etc.) hah, not surprising. I would love to do it.. I haven't officially signed up for it yet, & now with new OHSU bills, and my foot issues.. don't really know if I can do it, I mean, physically I could without biking for a week or more before, but I don't want to break myself down, because I don't know what hills to expect. Either way, if my foot isn't better in the next few days and I still can't bike, I still want to volunteer! : )
  4. Living Nutrition(raw) The Environment Magazine(promotes veggie stuff) VegNews Vegetarian Living & my favorite, Herbivore(based here in Portland).. : )
  5. me too!!! I love Portland indy media! Any city/indy media website is always amazingly full of information... I love anything or anyone I can learn from.
  6. oops, sorry if I typed that strange..(still trying to get use to the forum), the book is called: The Raw Truth by Jeremy A. Safron the main quote in the book is "Life promotes life" But I would say above all, it's the best one you could read, it's very indepth. My first raw book was Juliano's "The UNcook Book", & man.. did that make me want to just give up with how complex the recipes were... "The Raw Truth" has amazingly SIMPLE recipes that are very tasty. So that's definitely a plus... Also, if you have any questions feel free to ask.. I'd love to help however I can... : )
  7. I am indifferent on the issues, I've been pro-PETA, and anti-PETA in my nearly 11 vegan years.. After all is said and done, PETA's positives still far out weigh their negatives (when it comes to getting new animal welfare laws past, when it comes to providing for rescused animals, and when it comes to changing the way people think about certain things.) I do, however disagree with their tactics and feel it turns a lot of people away, or makes them feel attacked.. I still use the dvd's ('Chew on This' I think is far better than 'Meet your Meat') and info. booklets to spread the word. I also agree with Robert Cohen's(www.notmilk.com) opinions when it comes to some of PETA's "victories" for animals, like when they talk about "humane slaughter", and how people speaking at AR conferences will talk about those milestones, and how they are giving the animals better lives... But the end is all the same. As Robert Cohen put it beautifully in response to this in an article "When I hear these things and see these things going on at AR conferences, I imagine a pig walking up to the poteum, and saying "But I'm still going to die"...." (not an exact quote, but I thought it was put nicely.)
  8. L.A. POLICE INVADE NATION'S LARGEST COMMUNITY GARDEN Armed police stormed a community garden in South Central Los Angeles this week, arresting 25 people including actress Daryl Hannah. The 14 acre plot of land, tended by over 350 neighborhood fruit and vegetable farmers for a decade, is the largest urban community garden in the country, and a symbol of hope for the embattled South Central neighborhood. Although the highly successful garden provides affordable, mostly organic food for low-income residents in this economically depressed area, a ten-year ownership dispute over the land has led to a dramatic standoff between neighborhood residents and the powerful real estate lobby of Los Angeles. Despite massive public opposition, multi-millionaire real estate developer Ralph Horowitz obtained a court order to pave over the community garden and replace it with an industrial warehouse. After back-tracking on an offer to sell the 14 acre plot to neighborhood residents for $16 million, Horowitz called in the police and bulldozers to clear the property of inhabitants. Neighborhood farmers and residents, along with the L.A. organic community, have vowed to keep up the struggle and save the community garden. 9. If you are interested in justice issues, social issues, environmental issues, racism/sexism/speciesism etc, worldly issues, cultural issues, animal rights issues and health issues, just to name a few... It is ALL on the website : www.organicconsumers.org I have read every single article that exists on that website, and I think it is utterly astounding and brilliant. Organic Consumers Association takes articles from souces all over the web and news papers and puts them in one place, it shows the pros as well as the cons, facts, and opinion. Here is the latest from Organic Bytes #84: http://www.organicconsumers.org/2006/article_778.cfm enjoy! : )
  10. wow....I wouldn't know where to begin... I read, a lot! I am a research and information guru/seeker, so I try and read as much as possible. (on average I read 1-4 books per week, and about 5-50 articles per day, depending on the time I have to spend..) A few favorites are: "The Sexual Politics of Meat- A feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory" -- by Carol J. Adams The bibliography in this book alone is almost 20 pages long! This book revealed to me an entire new world of veganism that I wasn't as aware of, like for example.. the cultural manipulation of language to promote acceptablity in food, one of the reasons I believe we experience a large number of chicken eating veggies and fish eating veggies, is because we drop the word "meat" from what we're really eating. (ie. it's not "chicken meat", it's "chicken", it's not "fish meat", it's "fish") Pretty amazing and profound, highly recommended. "Vegan: the new ethics of eating" -by Erik Marcus I am a big Erik Marcus fan and promoter of his work(except one article I read in VegNews lately..), but I think if you want something lasting that will help "convert" others to the vegan lifestyle, or for information in general, this book is IT. I give this book to anyone I know who is interested in the veggie way of life, I've probably bought it at least 5 times. He is also a very good writer. "Beyond Beef- The rise and fall of the cattle culture" -by Jeremy Rifkin Speaking of beautiful writers, Jeremy Rifkin is one of the best. This book is written wonderfully, and is loaded with factual information. He also writes a lot of articles for Organic Consumers, so of course I am a big supporter. "The Detox Solution - by Dr.Patricia Fitzgerald" By all means, NOT a vegan book.. but very very informative, none the less. I am also a detox enthusiast, & this is one of the better books I have read on the subject. "The Body Electric -Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life" -by Robert O. Becker, M.D. and Gary Selden Recommended to me by Bo Rinaldi(owner of Blossoming Lotus), and is an amazing read. Anyone interested in reiki, massage, physiology, and anatomy will enjoy it..I am sure... : ) "The Top 100 Immunity Boosters -by Charlotte Haigh" Also, not entirely vegan, but 98% of this book is full of herbs, fruits, veggies, etc. It not only talks about all of the beneficial properties of fruits and veggies, but it dissects nutrients, and goes in depth on how to cure ailments with food. I have had first hand experience with food being my medicine, and continues to be.. so this book is a definite read for anyone interested in feeling euphoric. ok...since I am obviously going to write long experiences of some of my favorites, I'll briefly mention just a couple: Thrive -by Branden Brazier, Selling Sickness - by Ray Moyniham/Alan Cassels, Big Pharma -Exposing the Global Healthcare Agenda -by Jacky Law Any article from: www.organicconsumers.org www.notmilk.com www.newstarget.com is also informative and worth checking out. As for childhood influential books, "The Lurox" by Dr.Seuss would have to be at the top of my list ; )
  11. Hey! that is awesome you're reading about RAW, it is definitely the way to go... I've been raw for a few years now(95% +), and have read many books about it. Some of my favorites are: The Raw Truth-The Art of Preparing Living Foods --- by Jeremy A. Safron "Life promotes life", this book is probably the BEST one you could read about raw foods, it completely dissects everything, and even has a raw food pyramid! : ) Also, it also has the simplest more amazing recipes I've come across. Thrive -- by Branden Brazier Not completely raw, but he talks a fair amount about the importance of chlorella, and raw foods in the diet. He also does not take supplements, and explains some B-12 issues. www.brandenbrazier.com Fresh vegetable and fruit juices -- by N.W. Walker D. Sc. Talks extensively about eating raw/juicing veggies. Has a wealth of useful information in it. I hope that helps you in your raw journey!
  12. Hey! I might be able to make it... I always get frustrated with what to bring at potlucks, I always want to make something amazing(like my special vegan lasagna), but want something cheap & easy... So, salad it is!! hahah.. ok, yah.. so maybe. : )
  13. I just happen to find this posting.. so sorry for the delayed response! It was really nice meeting you as well loveliberate! I think it's GREAT you have a vegan family(wife & children), nothing but good things can come from that. The company definitely was lovely, and hopefully we can all get together again soon.. If you ever wanna go running on that track near 52nd sometime, just let me know! I'll probably be frequenting that area now that I know it exists... thanks!
  14. I am totally interested in doing this! I have been wanting to visit Amsterdam forever now...and this seems like a prime opportunity. I am at almost half a marathon in running currently, and could definitely do more, since my strength and endurance is improving all of the time... I would like to eventually run a marathon..or more! Anyhow... I'll just need to save some money for this... but sounds amazing!
  15. Like has been mentioned, there are soo many different kinds of stressors in this life, I tend to do something different with each one... Acupuncture sessions really help me feel revitalized and healthy (I get them every 2 months, or as I feel necessary).. I run for some, I do Pilates for others(mostly accomplishment stressors), dancing, practicing gentle yoga for general relaxation. I also plan a lot of the time, because I find that dissecting situations, breaking them down to there raw interior and growing from there, really helps and keeps me focused; without the stress. Above all though... I do find organic produce to be the best stress reliever. Especially grapes and strawberries.. : )
  16. I have a question for you... I have read a number of books dealing with juicing, the positive effects of, enzyme extraction, how too... etc. etc., I have also read about blending(such as a smoothie), and the pros and cons. Anyhow, my question is.. what do you think is better, juicing or blending? Does anyone know of any articles that list specific gains and losses of the two? For example, juicing wheatgrass is very healthy, but I have read that if you blend it, it oxidises... making it not as useful as if it were juiced. Are other veggies like this?? I would just really like to know..and haven't been able to find a source that could distinguish the difference other than "juicing is better"... but why is blending inferior?
  17. I agree with what most everyone has said on the issue.. you will encounter this sort of thing, but I find that often these people really are genuinely interested in the vegan lifestyle or are at least curious, once you dig thru all of the close-minded assumptions/misconceptions they have about food and where food comes from, you'll find they might start asking some questions... In order to ease this process along, I find reading veggie books/magazines(especially fitness ones!) while on my breaks at work helps.. I don't necessarily do it for that reason, but I do find co-workers reading thru them if I leave them on the table, or asking little questions here and there... it's pretty fascinating! I've been vegan for about half of my life(almost 11 years), so I've encountered probably every situation possible being vegan... although, I've found more people actually curious than anything else. And I would have never guessed the responses I'd get to being raw would be "Man! you're so healthy! you're going to live FOREVER!".. haha, so funny... but awesome! I am glad these frail/unhealthy skinny vegan stereotypes/generalizations are slowly being stripped away.. sorry to ramble! hah : )
  18. I will definitely be bringing a few cyclist friends! (hopefully, if they are available), but I have some vegan friends I bike with that I am sure would be totally interested. Also, we all really need to wear name tags to this thing! I am not going to know anyone! hah ; )
  19. I dig wheatgrass.. not only because of the enormously beneficial things I have read about it, but because I have had positive experiences with it myself. Several immediate changes I notice when consuming 1-4 oz. of wheatgrass per day: -Glowing skin, even more so than usual! -I rarely get a pimple, but when I am avidly consuming wheatgrass, I never get a single one, anywhere. -it feels to me, like a shot of espresso feels to someone who needs caffeine the energy also lasts. -I feel as though it helps strengthen my immune system -I DO feel like it helps purify my blood.
  20. Hi! I am a Pilates instructor, and have been doing it for a number of years, the results you can expect physically are basically dance and yoga combined. Pilates uses the philosphy of combining eastern and western training/exercise methods, so it's a nice intertwining of body building and yoga(that's the best way I can describe it). Everything in Pilates deals with core stength, because you do ALL of the bends/strengths, exercises, etc. with the abdominals and the breath. Breathing is extremely important, it is also very different from the breathing typical in Yoga. You can also expect to acheive and maintain perfect posture, which is very important to me. Also it corrects muscle imbalances, relaxes you/or can envigorate you(because you can do a cardio pilates), it is also an excellent form of physical therapy. Pilates is amazing, and if you keep up on it..(especially the contemporary style, which focuses on balanced flexion and extention.)..you will see permanent, profound results. : )
  21. Yet another veggie place within walking distance from me, awesome! There is an organic night club that is near me as well, it's located on 21st & SE Clinton, called "Night light", I've been there a couple of times, and they play very good music, as well as have a wide variety of vegan options, plus they are ORGANIC. Also, I believe there alcohol is vegan.
  22. I am planning on coming.. would love to meet other people on this forum, even though I am completely new to everyone... I've never been to a body building competition, should I come there for the pre-judging, or the finals? or both?
  23. Hemp is an AMAZING food and protein source(as well as other nutrients) .. Also, pea protein and rice protein are good as well. They also compliment hemp. I think you might mean essential fatty acids(since you're consuming fish), instead of cholestrol? If so, hemp is also full of those, flax seeds are a fantastic source, also nuts and the beautiful avocado. Check out some of the things Branden Brazier eats in his book "Thrive" www.brandenbrazier.com I have been soy-free for over 6 months, consuming very little soy for well over a year before that.. I have developed mild allergies to soy because of this, but I can still consume fermented soy(miso, tempeh) as well as uncooked tofu, maybe try that first, and see how your body reacts... It is definitely possible to be soy-free though, I currently am. Here is a plethora of reasons to not consume fish: http://www.organicconsumers.org/2006/article_17.cfm http://www.organicconsumers.org/foodsafety/fish_toxic.cfm http://www.organicconsumers.org/2006/article_150.cfm http://www.organicconsumers.org/politics/fishwaste120505.cfm I really hope that helps.. : )
  24. go raw! : ) check out Tonya Kay's experiences as well on her website: www.tonyakay.com and this interview: http://www.organicathlete.org/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=33&Itemid=31 I have also noticed that since I've been primarily raw my cramps, pms, and period have all diminished significantly.. When I am eating 80-95% local, organic, uncooked produce I get no cramps, and 2-3 days of light flow. Definitely better than what I have experienced in the past! Also, I've done some research on studies conducted of raw women and the loss of period, and it seems to happen to over 30% of women that are 70% or more raw ... pretty interesting, but it's not an underweight issue.. it's about the bodies ability to cleanse and remain clean.
  25. Do you have Wildwood naturals at all in Canada?? Not sure if it is there, but I would say it is the best out of any soy yogurt brand available. Plus they are devoted to organic foods(especially tofu), aren't corporately owned (fyi. SILK is owned by Whitewave, which is owned by Dean foods, the largest dairy producer in North America) , and they are a CO-OP. Anyhow, when I did eat soy yogurt..Wildwood is by far the best one. look for it, or ask natural food stores if they could possibly start getting it! http://www.pmo.com/
