so it's that time again. another season of The Ultimate Fighter. you may have heard that this season's coaches are Forrest Griffin and Rampage Jackson. what i just heard is that the fighters will have to win a fight just to get on the show. 32 fighter on the first episode, they will pair up, and the 16 winners get to be on the show. sounds like an interesting idea. and this is the same night as Ultimate Fight Night 13, which is a pretty stacked card. -Kenny Florian vs. Joe Lauzon -Karo Parisyan vs. Thiago Alves -Matt Hamill vs. Tim Boetsch -Houston Alexander vs. James Irvin -Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard -Kurt Pellegrino vs. Nate Diaz -Marcus Aurelio vs. Spencer Fi…

Thought I would throw some thoughts/ ideas into the mix. Upon reading some of the Martial arts/self defense threads, ive noticed some important points missing. It seems that people tend to look for the one answer for all defense problems. And too many people are willing to come up with their opinion as the definitive answer to that persons concerns/troubles. More disturbing is the search and offering of "magic beans". The no bullshit answer is that there are none. It takes hard work, sweat, blood, and tears. It takes the willingness to admit weakness and search for truth. Just as we all know there are no magic pills for health, strength, or any sort of shor…

I'm trying to get more into yoga, but my hamstrings are so tight. Yoga is not as enjoyable as I know it could be if I had looser hamstrings. What should I do to loosen them up?

After realizing how horrible my cardiovascular endurance was, I started doing the Couch to 5K running plan. I'm up to week 4 and I've having problems with sore ankles that's keeping me back. When I run for more than a few minutes, both of my ankles are severely sore to the point that I can't continue running. If I rest for a minute or so, the soreness goes away and I can run again for at least two minutes before it hurts the point of stopping again. There's no particular part of my ankles that hurt, it's pretty uniform and it's definitely more soreness than true pain. When I'm done running, my ankles feel pretty much OK until I go running again. I was having some so…

I have been considering getting toe shoes, which apparently has been a unique craze that's been happening for quite some time. Shoes like the one's on this site http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/index.htm First are they really safe to use for athletic purposes only. Second are there ones made from non leather material?

Hey everybody, My wife and I just got back from out first time with a personal trainer, we are looking to get fit. When we mentioned that we were Vegan and ate Tofu. He was very against tofu saying that it is not good for men and can mess up one's thyroid and that it is mostly made of Genetically Modified Soybeans. I know I have read an article in Veg News about this. I know it is best to have a varied diet, but I don't want our personal trainer to have a bad opinion of Tofu, I like him as a trainer. Any ideas on what I should tell him or articles I could send him. Thanks, Tom Scholfield http://www.AHealthyVegan.com

I lift and strength train 6 days a week, and I've been running 6 days a week, with an absolutely spotless diet, and my weight just goes up or stays the same (on a 750 calorie deficit not counting exercise losses!) Yes I know I'm a freak, and I have an appointment with a doctor to figure out WTF, but that's not until late march. So, would going up to 7 days of cardio a week be a problem? (I do about 1 hour of sprint/jog intervals, on the recommendation of my personal trainer.) I just want to know if it's detrimental to run too much, negating risk of injury. Thanks VBBF!

Hope everyone is having a happy 4th. I've been tossing the idea around in my head of getting into track (I'm sure the Olympics being right around the corner is having an affect on me). That being said, I'm a little lost as to how to get started in it though. I'm in SoCal (north L.A. County), so if anybody knows of any adult leagues I could look into in that area, it would be much appreciated. Just turned 24, 6'1", ~150lbs. Also would like to hear any training tips anyone might have (in particular with regards to how much volume to put in). At this point, I think probably the 400m or 800m might be where I'd fit best. I like the shorter distances, but I think I'm more prone…

Has anyone on this board competed in a 5k pump and run? This past winter I competed in my third one and benched my bodyweight 14 times (I only weigh 145 lbs) and ran a 5k in 21 minutes. I will be competing in a 5k pump and run at the arnold classic in about 7 months and would like to get my 5k time down to 18 minutes (I used to run a sub 16 minute 5k in college) and bench my bodyweight 20 times. I should also note I am currently trying to bulk up over the next four months and put on 15 - 25 lbs. Does anyone have any tips on how to improve my bench press for an event like this? Last year the first 50 finishers were able to bench their bodyweight 30 times.

http://gbf.convio.net/site/TR/Events/General?px=1005874&pg=personal&fr_id=1040 I'm training for a 2 day ride in October to benefit Galveston Bay Foundation. By far the most strenuous athletic event I will have done so far. I need to raise money though, so please consider helping a fellow vegan out. Rachel

Before having my daughter (second child) I was beginning to train in hopes of maybe doing some women's physique competitions. I hadn't done much research about it and after going to an actual competition I decided that wasn't exactly what I wanted to aspire to. Big ups to women who do it - just not for me. My husband trains in MMA and I've had people tell me over the years (even before UFC started getting so big) that I should consider getting into it - but I always shrugged it off. Recently I decided it's really something I want to pursue. I have very recently taken up boxing. I have been told by my husband (who isn't the biggest compliment giver usually) that I'm …

Does anyone have any training programs / links they could post? I am trying to find a good program to get me ready for the season. Preferably something that has some weight training mixed in. Last year I did one Tri and fell in love with it.

As some of you may know I am a cyclist. I am 4 weeks into a tough trianing program to get me ready for some really hard races I have coming up. I am a raw vegan and I am encountering some problems. That is, i am constantly hungry, tired and I am not recovering well from my hard workouts. I know this has to be nutrition related but I am at a loss as to what is missing. I try to eat as mch as possible but my appetite is not there. If you guys have any suggestions or recommendations it would be greatly appreciated. I need to come up with a structured eating plan just like I have a structured training plan.
