Weight on dumbell vs barbell?
willpeavy replied to FormicaLinoleum's topic in Bodybuilding/Strength Training
I like dumbbell bench presses better. It's a more challenging workout, and if they get too heavy you can drop them on your sides unlike the barbell which can come crashing on you chest -
I'd be up for helping out with a co-op style fitness center

Aaron what's up dude. Good to see you on here. We should hit the gym together once I'm up there in December. Rob when you and Topher move to Portland too that will be awesome, Vegan Fitness Team will take over the town!

Help Gaining Weight
willpeavy replied to AllIveEverTouched's topic in Bodybuilding/Strength Training
I've been skinny for most of my life, but gained around 40 pounds in the last couple of years through strength training and eating big. What worked for me is: lots of nuts, beans, rice, oatmeal, bananas, avocados, and berries -
Did you read the link I posted to the yahoo news article? "The new (Rocky Balboa) film will begin production early next year and is backed by MGM, Columbia Pictures, and Revolution Studios."

I bring a few Clif bars in my pocket and start eating those if I'm in a situation where the group I'm with wants to stop and get junk food

Hell yeah Bodycount! When I used to play guitar in a gigging band I would play "There Goes The Neighborhood" for my soundcheck

That's awesome. When I was in middle school I spent a lot of my free time with my friends building a tree house. We kept working on it until it was two stories tall, but nothing as advanced as the stuff in those pictures.

The Rocky soundtrack is some of my all time favorite workout music compash. Also I like the Conan the Barbarian and Robocop soundtracks Also, for working out I like Bad Religion, Helmet, Gorilla Biscuits, Undying, and a whole bunch of other heavy rock stuff

I understand your dilemma since I have a 20 month old. We're planning to take him to the local town recreation center for a kid's Halloween party. I figured I would just try to keep him occupied by bringing stuff like bananas, rice milk, Gorilla Munch cereal and other things I know he likes. I think I'll try to convince the kids there that cool kids eat stuff like apples and bananas and candy is for losers. But I'm not sure if that will work or not. We'll see

Yeah if you wanted to do a permanent stand it would take several hundred dollars to buy a professional cart and get a food vendors license. But if you are just trying to make some extra bucks short term, you could get by with spending about $20 on veggie dogs, condiments, paper plates and napkins, etc and set it up on a card table near a college. And you'd probably make good bank

Greenpeace T-shirt Design Contest: Kleenex + ancient forests
willpeavy replied to K-oz's topic in General Discussion
Good call on posting here K-Oz, I'm on the Greenpeace mailing list too. I bet Richard would be good at coming up with a shirt design for this one -
Sat Oct 15 wrist roller and hand gripper work til my forearms were fried 50 incline situps Also, I built a new wrist roller. I've been experimenting with different designs, and I really like this one better than any other roller I've tried. So I'm going to build a few more of them and try selling them on eBay or on a website.

I used to go to a gym, but I train at home now. Pros - I can work out with my son at home (he likes to hang on to the pullup bar, do calf raises, do rows on my door gym, and he does somersaults while I do pushups) Cons - I had a lot more equipment when I went to the gym

Set up a vegan hot dog cart. There's a guy in downtown Orlando who has one. He gets a giant can full of veggie dogs, heats them over a gas flame, and has a bunch of containers with toppings on the top of his cart. He sells them for a couple of dollars each, and he seems pretty busy with customers every time I've been by. I bet you could make some decent cash with a stand like that in Corvallis, especially if there is a college nearby

I think you have a good idea compassionategirl. Even if you don't get a lot of press coverage, people will always be able to respond to comments about veganism being unhealthy with, "Oh yeah, well a vegan climbed Mt Everest"

Yeah Craig's list is a good site, we already have a "housing wanted" ad up there. What job did your friend find Michael? The job search has been going pretty well for me so far. I already passed the qualifying exams for 3 different social services jobs with the state of OR

Hey Madcat, yeah me and my wife and son are moving to Portland in mid-December. I'm really excited about it. We're going to stay in an extended stay hotel for the first month while we look for a place to rent. If you know of any good spots to live, please recommend!

Ethical dilemma....what to do with old leather?
willpeavy replied to veggymeggy's topic in General Discussion
Sell it and donate 10% to Vegan Outreach -
I think hiking a big mountain to get press is a good idea. A woman named Rachel Bjork rode a bicycle across the country a couple of years back to protest KFC and promote veganism, and it got a fair amount of press. - http://www.kentuckyfriedcruelty.com/racheldiary.asp
