  1. I think the word "Veganism" is in a transitory state that needs to change... I am tired and not going to be as eloquent as I would hope to be... but, nonetheless.... Our planet is dying. We are in a state of peril. We need more "vegans"....... however we want to loosely define that term for ourselves. I am happy if omnis click on my website and eat 3 meals per week without meat. I am happy if a meat eater eats a Vegan diet, but still eats cheese occasionally.... I am happy if PETA offends 20 Vegans to recruit 50 omnis to try a Vegan lifestyle... I am happy if someone who calls himself Vegan recruits 10 friends and family members but doesen't see a need to throw out his already paid for wool rug or leather jacket... I am happy if people want to go Pescetarian in the hopes they will find a way to one day go Vegan... and I am happy if someone wants to call himself "Vegan" but still consumes honey or is a humane beekeeper to earn a little extra money. All I want is to be a part of a community who embraces ANYONE who wants to see change in this world and live a more compassionate lifestyle... for the sake of the animals... for the sake of health... and for me.... it's so my daughter actually has a planet to raise her kids on.... There is more at stake here for ME than if someone does or does not eat honey... Robert gets it.... and that is why he stepped into this kind of thread... whereas he typically avoids anything the least bit contraversial... We've reached a point where it isn't about ANYONE being more Vegan than the next... its about getting more people on board by any means possible. Please... somone write a book to redefine the word Veganism. I don't eat honey, but the point is... I don't care if my neighbor DOES and has a bee farm and wants to call himself "Vegan" because he doesen't eat meat, fish, chicken or dairy. He is HELPING more than HURTING this fragile planet. The only thing that saddens me, is that I am in a community where I feel I am a minority in this belief instead of a majority... I care that much... that it actually saddens me... as much as it probably saddens the pure/better/more/elite by-the-book Vegans that people eat honey....

  3. If I was asking you to critique the nutritionist's food plan, I would have given you the nutritionist's food plan. Yes, but you did ask us what we thought about the diet that she gave you buy just giving us a very slim overview, and then asked us this below... I am not a Registered Dietitian, but I have to admit one of my pet peeves is when people want to do things "their way".... but they came to me to help them lose the fat that they weren't able to on their own. Even though you are not happy with the program that she gave you, you probably consulted a nutritionist because you weren't happy with the results that you were acheiving on your own correct? I can tell you that I HAVE given a client a piece of fruit with 5 nuts before because she was 5 feet tall and 30 pounds overweight and putting a full serving of nuts or fats at each meal would have increased her calories too much to lose the fat she wanted to. But her protein for the day was about 100 grams or so (referring to your comment that the protein at that snack seemed too low). What your calorie needs are depends on your age, height, current weight, activity level and goals. Now if my client comes to me after a week and tells me she is hungry every day, I will add another serving of something and increase them gradually, but that is where the communication process comes in between you and the nutritionist. If you are wanting more food... tell her you are hungry... or ask her why only 5 nuts. Perhaps she can explain the reason to you. Also sweet.sarah... the person who responded to you asking for a better overview of your diet plan (DV) is a Registered Nurse and knows QUITE a bit about nutrition and was simply asking for more information to better guide you.... which is what I would need to review to see why you think its such a crappy plan... because so far, giving you a snack with a piece of fruit and a few nuts and salads with nuts sounds like she's trying to increase your healthy fats, which is a good thing, but again... would need to see what breakfast and dinner looks like... etc.
  4. french fries, amy's cheeseless pizza... chips, chips and more chips... tofurkey sausage dipped in vegannaise and tomato paste... huge avocado tomato, red onion toasted sandwiches, wine, wine and more wine... A veggie burger with carmelized onions, tomatoes and vegannaise/ketchup mixed together with sweet potato fries. A huge toasted everything bagel with tofutti cream cheese, slices tomato, thinly slices red onion, salt and pepper.... sigh... all of the foods I can rarely ever have...
  5. so glad you are progressing nicely I have been cleared from surgery to do EVERYTHING back to normal, so no more excuses for me either...and I too, will be starting up again on circuits to burn fat. But unlike you... I will not be enjoying them... ha, ha. Keep up the great work!!
  6. very rough estimate for myself. 125 - 140 grams protein 100 - 125 grams carbs 60 grams fat What do I base it on? A calorie calculator that I use... Zone principles... body for life principles... the importance of fat and protein from my last trainer... Chad Nichols (but with less protein)... and hundreds of figure competitor and fitness model diets I've obsessively researched over the past few years thus coming up with my own formula that works for me and my clients
  7. I became a Vegan purely for environmental reasons. I went to an Earth Day expo... saw the University's PETA booth, sifted through the literature that they had there saying the number one cause of man made Global Warming was from factory farms and all things related to us using animals for food. Went home, went online and stumbled upon several articles that gave me facts and figures that it's not the C02 we should be concerned with, but the Methane. The thing that stuck in my head the most was that not only is Methane a much STRONGER gas than C03, but that 37% of all methane is from the livestock we are raising as food. What really stuck in my head though was the fact that Methane only stays in our environment for 10 years whereas C02 (you know.. the whole "drive a Prius... change a lightbulb, etc, campaign) stays in our atmosphere for 100 years. Therfore if more people went Vegan we could actually start to reverse the man made causes of Global Warming. When I found that out I went Vegan the next day. I still didn't get the whole honey thing or "why not leather?" until I read the book "Being Vegan" which showed me all of the hows and whys of why we don't wear leather or eat honey. And so I learned more about the animal rights and the compassionate side of Veganism, etc.

I guess I was reacting to the emails that I get from people who want me to help them get "really cut" but they don't want to eat any protein, nothing artificial, no soy, no grains, no powders, only raw, nothing processed... but yes... please make them cut. My bad... ha, ha. hey, make it and let me know how it tastes! If it's not too ing, I'll make it and eat it
  9. thank for the list Rainra... I wonder if we can find a list of non-GMO meat substitute companies or products. Especially when feeding my daughter, I would like to be careful and choose wisely whenever possible. It is unrealistic of me to think I will consume ONLY non-GMO foods forever... but if I'm standing in the store and I see Boca Burgers next to a non-GMO veggie burger substitute for my kid... I'd like to know what the better choice is. Also... for those posters who think non-GMO foods don't pose any danger or thread... wouldn't it be better to be safe than sorry? With that article about the male species dying off (another thread) mutant animals being conceived on a more regular basis, not to mention the host of new virusis, cancers, etc... it is worth taking a look at. I mean... they're really altering nature... we don't know the full consequences of that yet... but alot of evidence is surfacing that is pointing to this being one of the problems...
  10. DV and BW, Living in Southern California, I'm exposed to sun over 90% of the time. Also I drink 2 cups of Soymilk fortefied with Vitamin D daily. Do you think someone even in my circumstance would be a candidate for D supplementation? I am all for taking something if I need it, but like Rainra, I've read studies that say those who are exposed to more dramatic climates are prone to it than people in sunny climates. I only want to take supplements that I truly feel I need, like B12, Calcium, etc. Do you really think I should take it? I'll trust your judgement because I don't have time to research absolutely everything...
  11. It doesen't exist my friend.... PERIOD. I am 150% convinced that what you want does not exist. Let's just take your 1st request alone.... 20 to 25 grams per serving. There are only 2 bars on the market that I know of that have a minimum of 20 grams of protein. Organic Food Protein Bars and Cliff Builder Bars. I think there's 1 other that's a Soya distributed in the U.K. but that is the extent of the high protein bars PERIOD. I'd be happy to find any bar besides the 2 that even have over 20 grams of protein, but what you're looking for does not exist. Cliff Builder Bar has soy, Organic Food Protein Bar has lots of nut products... and you mentioned Vega, but Vega bars only have 10 grams of protein. Thought I'd save you alot of time and hassle by telling you that you won't find it.
  12. Ugh, this thread is making me susceptible to autism. You hear sarcasm in her writing, Mr. "I guess the articles haven't told you anything"? And whether or not you care for wikipedia itself, the sources referenced in the thiomersal controversy article are quite extensive and, more impressively, many are from peer-reviewed journals. I haven't seen you provide anything of the sort. Patrick, thanks for debating so civily (is that a word?) in this very sensitive subject. I do see both sides of this argument and for me the jury is still out. It doesen't mean I would hesitate to vaccinate my child, but my best friend and another very close friend have autism on the male side and they are being very careful about the vaccinations and are very concerned. We have alot to learn on this subject still. I didn't read through the thread in its entirety, but isn't there just one vaccine in particular that causes the contraversy? Not all of them? What if someone chooses not to do it. Are the kids still allowed in school? From what I understand it's a prerequisite to entering any public school for children
  13. This is in almost all cases here at this forum a gross over exageration, and simplification, of what adding some extra vegetable protein to one diet really is. I'm not going to mention names but i see it alot on here and on the profile page. Soap box? By not wanting to eat GMO foods? No couture547... By "SOAPBOX", he means that you seem to go on and on and on AND ON on every thread putting down those of us who choose to consume Vegan protein powders as people who eat "just like an omni" (that is what you said)..... and that you are better than everyone because you only consume whole, non-processed foods and don't focus on your protein consumption. And like he said, you're gross exaggerations that claim anyone who follows a higher protein MODERATE carb diet (something that works for many people, although you don't seem to be interested in what works... only in repeating your same 10 - 20% creed over and over again to the point of naseau) is untrue. Again, you are not interested in facts. You are not interested in the many examples that I've given you of people who are getting results by supplementing with some additional Vegan protein powders. I've given you lots and lots of real-life examples of people who were only able to acheive their desired results when they supplemented... but you don't want to here any real life examples... you just want to keep repeating yourself ON YOUR SOAPBOX... that we're all "Atkins following protein worshippers" simply because we've gotten results on a little bit of a different ratio that you seem to spout off as a holy creed. And please knock it off about the GMO thing... there are MANY non-GMO vegetable proteins out there to choose from, so please.... enough already. Post something positive for a change. You're negativity is really starting to wear on me... but maybe that's the point for you? To go on and on for pages and pages only to get the last word and therefore feel some sort of victory??? cough, SOAPBOX

  15. I answered this thread very rushed so I went back and edited my original reply... Although I think Atkins WORKS for weight loss, I certainly do not advocate it for many reasons, and I do not consider it a healthy diet.
  16. The 2nd part of your explanation was just a little bit unclear and I didn't really understand it but I understood the first half of the paragraph. Women are different. Many women cannot get away with as many carbs as men can. When I went vegan the very first book I bought was called "Low Carb Vegetarian Cooking". Having said that, we need some carbs for energy to get through our workouts and overall health. There is no need to do something as extreme as Atkins to lose fat. So to answer you're question... yep.. Atkins works (although it certainly isn't healthy and most people gain all of the weight back plus some once they resume their old eating habits). Yep, many women need to monitor their carbs and focus on what kind of carbs to lose weight. And yes, the lower half is the toughest to lose. As far as not losing muscle, a BCAA recovery product such as Xtend aids to preserve lean muscle tissue when you do your cardio and training. Eat every 3 hours, make your main meals a balanced ration of proteins, carbs and healthy fats. Watch your starches at nighttime. Cut out your flours, sugars and processed foods. Find a good strength routine and do cardio regularly. Drink lots of water.
  17. I aim for 2 servings. A serving for me would be 3- 4 oz raspberries, 1 small banana, etc. To answer your question more exact, I go by the number of carb grams in the fruit to determine a serving.
  18. Yes, I put much more emphasis on veggies than fruit. I still get in 1 serving of fruit a day, but never more than two, and like I've said before... I'm always putting what I eat through dietary software and most of the time it's off the charts on every vitamin and mineral.
  19. height weight age what do you do for workouts? What does a typical day of eating look like for you? This would help us guide you. I want you to be a fit, happy healthy Vegan... so lets start with the above questions... thanks!
  20. You're never going to make everyone happy, Robert. You did what you felt was best... I'm sure everyone will realize it was for the better in the long run.... You do a great job!
  21. You're talking about your dinner right? Tofu stirfry made with high protein tofu and whatever veggies your heart desires... red peppers, watercress, onions, broccolli, etc. Yes, if you're primary goal is burning fat, cutting out late night starches is a good idea because we are less active, therefore late night starches and carbs will often be stored as fat. Just stay out of the kitchen late at night. Almost everyone I know who is trying to lose fat struggles with this... there is no easy solution... just distract yourself... get in bed and watch a good movie... whatever it takes to just avoid doing it. And if you lose the battle once in awhile that's okay. For me losing the battle is a big 'ole bag of popcorn and a few glasses of wine. I'd do that almost every night if I could get away with it, but I can't... so I distract myself, knowing that a couple times a week I might slip up. It's what we do more often than not that counts... not what you do every once in awhile.
