  1. I have checked out Mooshoes and they have a really nice selection of dress shoes and such. Also, if you look under the "leather alternatives" thread I got a bunch of suggestions there.
  2. Ok, I just realized I never did post back - On day one, I got my 100 situps in easily. Pushups are a lot harder! I was really short on time too, and I ended up at only 15 for the day . But, it's ok, I"m motivated to get my numbers up! I shall make it a part of my routine now, and I'll let you know when I make some progress! I've got to get some muscles to show off so I can hold my own on our vegan vacation!
  3. Just a heads up, he was at work all day and now he's in Eugene with Topher working on the movie...so don't be offended that he hasn't replied right away Poor guy has a cold too He's not letting it slow him down though! I don't know how he has so much energy, he just keeps going!
  4. The reasoning is that the active cultures in yogurt keep a healthy balance of good bacteria present and prevent yeast proliferation. It's true - but it doesn't need to be yogurt. Just taking the bacteria like you said works just fine. Plus, unless you're on antibiotics or are prone to yeast infections to start with, there's not much need for preventative measure anyway.
  5. How neat ! I just signed up! http://www.VegSpace.com/veggymeggy
  6. WOW that's cheap! Alright, I'm going to the Netherlands for my advanced degrees! On the chemistry - once I get into the stuff that's applicaple, like fats and carbs and such, then yeah, that's more interesting to me. That's still 2 terms away though Right now I'm trying to memorize alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, methyls, ethyls, etc, etc, etc, I'm no good at it BUT - hehehe, if I need help, I'm asking you since you say it's so easy!
  7. Topher's here! Hahaha I beat Robert to it
  8. I'm taking a break from my studying; I've been doing it all night! I'm feeling really frustrated today because it seems like graduation is SOOOO far off. I took some time off/only went part time for the last 2 years, and so now instead of being in my senior year of college, I'm only a junior I don't exactly regret the path I took, because I had a lot of good life experiences (and bad) and came back to school more dedicated than ever. But it's so discouraging looking at my transcripts and my graduation requirements and seeing how much I still have to do! What's especially frustrating is the amount of difficulty I've had getting the classes I need...there is a nutrition class I need to take as pre-requisite to almost every other nutrition class I have to take that I haven't been able to get into the last 2 terms in a row! I even talked to the professor personally and he wouldn't let me in because I'm not a graduating senior! On top of all that, I wonder how I'm ever going to get through my classes because there is SO MUCH CHEMISTRY! I'm more of a verbal, conceptually oriented person - not scientific! I'm dedicated to my major because I know it's what I want to do, and all these chemistry courses are like building blocks to get to the stuff I actually care about learning...but I worry about getting good grades in these classes. O-Chem may be the death of me! I know I can do it - but it's so hard to focus on it and it takes so much work. I'm really worried about keeping my GPA up too so I can get into grad school....I'm already going to be 23 when I get my B.S. so I don't want to wait at all to start my masters. THEN, after that, I want my doctorate! I want more than anything to be a dr. of nutrition someday..... but, right now, it all just seems so far away ...That's my rant for the night; I feel a little bit better now. Time to go back to studying before Topher arrives!
  9. I got ditched for soccer tonight Sorry Brett, I don't have any advice, I'm just venting! These are the right guys to ask though
  10. Hehehe. I, for one, am getting pretty excited. I haven't heard from Robert yet today, but he seemed to think Topher might even get here tonight I can't believe he's traveled so fast! What a speed demon! I shall have to go make myself all pretty for his arrival....no, just kidding, but I am at least going to try to vacuum! Now there will be 3 vegans in the house!
  11. Welcome! Good luck with your goals; with an attitude like that of course you will achieve them! You'll find lots of helpful people around here; they really know their stuff. Plus they're all just fun and nice and cool to talk to too. Again - Welcome!!! -Megan
  12. $4,200 WOW, I had no idea it cost you so much to print them! I'm so glad you're seeing this project through; I think it's really awesome. What do you anticipate the cost being per calendar for us to buy them? I will do my best to get as many calendars out there as possible! Everyone I know is getting one from me!
  13. Good thought! I will look into that! Total sidenote - I was just looking at your website, and OH MY GOSH do you have some cute stuff! Expect an order soon!
  14. I could probably post ads around campus? I don't know how effective that is, or what the most effective way would be, but I'm sure there's got to be some sort of market on campus? Ideas?
  15. 10000% agree!!!!! Aw, thanks guys People always ask me why I did, and I can pinpoint the exact moment - I was in Seattle at Pike Place with my parents, and we went into an "old-fashioned" butcher shop - the kind that has whole carcasses hanging from the ceiling, and sells ALL types of 'meat' including intestines and tongue and such. I almost got sick right there in the store, and I told my mom then I'd never eat meat again. They didnt' believe me at first, but after a few months they figured out I wasn't kidding. I guess part of the reason it took me so long to go full vegan though was that I never really ate dairy anyway, so I didn't think about it much. Even when I was really young (like 4 or 5 yrs old) I'd dump my milk down the sink when my mom gave it to me. I wouldn't eat eggs. Pretty much just yogurt and ice cream, which are easy enough to give up especially since there are vegan alternatives. I guess I"m just lucky that it was so easy for me, I am definitely NOT a 'natural' meat eater! But the point is of course, not WHEN you become vegan, only that you do. My friend's parents became vegan when they were in their 50's!!! Better late than never right?
  16. I think Kourtney still doesn't have internet at her new place...I haven't seen her in a week or so, but I think the only time she's been online is when she's been over here....I need to give her a call! I get so busy and the only people I DO keep in touch with are online! I think straight to veganism is a big jump for most people....I know it would have been tough for me to do all at once - of course I was also 11 when I went vegetarian...my parents were not exactly supportive of it but I'm pretty stubborn once I get an idea in my head. I'm pretty sure if I'd said I was going vegan then they'd have forced me to eat non-vegan food out of concern for my health, especially being at an age when I was just going through puberty. I think what bothers me the most is people who claim vegetarianism to be "cool" or "trendy". Shortly after I became a vegetarian, when I was around 13 or so, I knew at least 10 other girls who began saying they were vegetarian. NONE of them lasted more than a month, and most of them cheated while they were still saying they were vegetarian. It was a rebellion thing I think, and a weight loss thing. (13 yr olds are crazy!)
  17. I was 'only' vegetarian for the last 10 years; I didn't switch to vegan until this year. Don't hate
  18. i'm only happy when its complicated. Though I know you can't appreciate it.
  19. You won't know until you have a copy for yourself ... OOOOOOH, Alex, now that's just teasing!!!!
  20. Aww Alex, I'm sorry you had a bad day. I did too I hope today is better for you!
  21. Not quite sure what you mean....? An elective is a course that you take that is not required to earn a degree in your major; basically it's a class you take because you want to. There are a certain number of elective credits that you have to fill to get your degree, and you are required to take certain "types" of electives, but within each category you are able to choose a specific class. For instance, I have elective requirements for classes about diversity, but within that I can choose women's studies class, a chicano history class, etc. Your major is the field in which you're getting your degree, so for you I believe you said that was engineering. You're department courses (the courses about engineering) will undoubtedly be harder than your elective credits just by nature of the degree you're seeking. I hope this makes sense? I'm sure once you get enrolled you'll get the lingo down - sorry if I'm confusing you! Oh - and as far as recommending courses - for ME, so far the most interesting classs I've had have been microbiology, exercise science, poetry, sociology, and all political science courses. (and of course anything related to my major, nutrition. Exercise science is my minor) I'm so excited for you to have this opportunity! I know it's going to be a great experience for you!
  22. I don't know if there's a name for what's wrong with my knee? I've never heard the floating patella term, at least in reference to me....but you're right, I have been riding my bike a LOT more than I used to lately, and sometimes it hurts pretty badly, like it's really pulling on the the tendon (quadriceps femoris tendon?) at the top of my knee. But I hope it's not my bike cuz that's my only way to class!!!
  23. Thanks guys - I will try to get in to a doctor eventually, it's just hard to do because I'm not in my home town and I don't know where I can go here in Corvallis that is covered by insurance. Plus, at this point I think I need to go see a sports injury sort of doctor, because all my GP can do is refer me to a specialist anyway. I think I've got at least 2 distinct problems going on my knee right now - one related to my patellar ligament and the other my IT (iliotibial) band. I finished up 8wks of physical therapy on the IT band this spring and it was better for awhile, but I have a feeling it's .....um, not right again. I'm sorry to hear you guys have knee problems too (Topher, Tiff...) KNEES SUCK!!!! At least when they don't work correctly.... I'm sure they're fabulous if you can actually use them! I'll let you know what the doc says if I can find one!
  24. I was just sitting here at my desk, legs crossed, reading posts on the forum.... I started to uncross my legs to stand up and I felt everything around my patella go....*wiggle wiggle*.....and then I felt that allllll too familar feeling of my patella going *slip* out of place then *snap* back into place. Uh oh. Now I'm concerned. I've alredy had surgery on my patellar ligament to, supposedly, prevent me from ever dislocating my patella again. (I used to do it frequently. This issue is the reason I had to quit playing softball competitively.) My ligament was connected to my tibia by 2 large screws until last summer, when I had them removed because they were beginning to come out on their own, which was quite painful. (One broke though so there's actually about half a screw buried in my bone.) Now everthing is supposed to be all healed and sturdy and properly functioning. But if that's the case, why did that just happen?! It hurt! And now I'm worried!
