big news on the MMA scene. current UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Coutre has suddenly relinquished his belt and resigned from UFC. he will not even be commentating at any events. apparently this decision stems from two things. one, Fedor has signed with another company so Randy has no chance of fighting him, and that is the only fight he really wants. and two, Randy heard what the UFC is paying other top names, and it way more than they have ever paid him. so he feels used and disrespected by the UFC. it's all over the MMA sites i have seen, it's on Randy's official website. it's all anyone is talking about right now. i guess it is just so sudden. h…

PORTLAND, Ore. - A bicyclist died Thursday in a collision with a loaded cement truck in downtown Portland. The accident happened about 1:15 p.m. Thursday near the corner of West Burnside Street and 14th Avenue. Witnesses say the truck and cyclist, described as a young female, were both waiting for a light to change at the corner. When the signal changed, the truck began to turn right onto Burnside and struck the cyclist, who was crossing the street. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police closed West Burnside Street in both directions between 12th and 15th Avenue while they worked at the scene of the incident. The identities of the cyclist and truck driver ha…

I started training mostly for self-defense purposes, but also for the physical fitness/strength aspect. I wanted to get into better shape, and martial artists always seemed to be in the best shape. I also wanted to learn how to properly and effectively defend myself, were the need to do so ever to arise. I have to say that while these motivations remain, my thoughts on training have definitely changed and evolved. I can't really describe how or why, but I feel like my reasons for continuing to train have changed and evolved as well. It's fun, it's challenging, and I feel like it's changing me, and not just in a physical sense. So, why do you train martial arts?

I started reading about yoga in elementary school and have remained interested since then. Although I usually keep my mouth shut, I feel a little sick every time I hear people treating yoga as excercise, or talking about new LA style of Hatha yoga. I don't have any problem with people using Hatha yoga for physical benefit, but I feel like the people on this forum are probably more openminded than most people, so I'd liekt o share my understanding of yoga. Yoga is a sanksrit word meaning "yoke" (like oxen on a plow) or union. Yoga is not an activity you do, it is a way of life. It is a method of spritual growth for the sole purpose of unifying your individual soul wi…

Hi! A vegan group here in Austin is doing a restaurant visit to a South Indian restaurant friday night that I have never been to in town (way up north away from me)and I really like to go. However saturday morning is my first sprint distance (ok well first ever ) triathalon. I have a feeling that I should try to keep my diet as clean as I can on friday and whatnot So im sorta weary about going out to eat at an indian restaurant as there are some not so healthy things there to taste. Should I skip out or just only eat certain things? Thanks!

I started my martial arts about 5 years ago. Because we didnt have any Jeet Kune Do gyms in Utah at the time I trained out of books and videos, occasionally having sparring nights in a basement of a friends house. I joined a Muay Thai gym a couple years later because all of my friends were joining Not a very good reason. I didnt like the atmosphere and the bully attitude of most the people in the gym. Plus I felt I already knew how to fight I wanted to learn self defense. Sadly, most Muay Thai schools in america train for boxing rings and thats all. I tore my knee during a horribly executed kick which I was never trained on how to throw. So I quit the gym and got sur…

hey there. well, this fitness thing is sort of addictive. i'm wanting to learn to fight. i spent many years fencing doing foil and then sabre, and if we all carried swords, i'd be really comfortable in confrontations. anyway, i'm not very graceful, but would like to join the local boxing club to learn to avoid, take, and deliver punches. the coolest fight i ever saw was in highschool. this big kid was picking on a little skinny guy. he pushed him. the little guy stepped around so the bigger guy had his back to the lockers, and then in like ten seconds landed ten or fifteen punches to the bully's face, with the lockers and the speed of the punches keeping the b…

As some of you may know I was to race the Mt.washington hillclimb this weekend. Well I crashed on my bike 2 weeks ago, got a concussion, broke a thumb, tore my groin muscle and cracked a bone in my leg. Did this keep me off the bike, no but I have been in a lot of pain. Anyway, Dr's told me not to race but I was not going to listen. I think God wanted me to listen because the weather was so bad they cancelled the race. This says it all: http://www.velonews.com/race/dom/articles/13124.0.html

I goots say, I have been doing Pilates for about a month now, 1x a week. It has been great for me. My Chronic hip pain has decreased. I am getting stronger. It is helping my posture and I have lost some weight. I do other exercises that also contribute to all of this but I am really enjoying Pilates. I think a lot more folks should do it. Many people work the big muscles and forget to do training for the core muscles and the smaller stabilizing muscles. Also it is interesting that my class is always women with the occasional guy. Why don't more men do Pilates? Anyone else out there a recent convert? Or even a long time lover of Pilates?

Please let me know!! For reference...I have a Hercules bike. I know it was made in England and I've been told its from the 70s. All the parts look to be in pretty good shape but let me know what you think.... So seeing as how I only live 5 1/4 miles from my work I figured I would start riding my bike everyday. So this was only the second or third day in a row (about fourth day total) that I have done this and my bike is completely effed in the a. for quite sometime i could not shift to second gear. the first and second would act as first and the third gear would act as third. about a mile away from work today the chain fell off (for the second time in one mile!!!) and whe…

If you'd like to learn a traditional meditation technique, using a mantra, I'm willing to give instruction and coaching to anyone who might be ready to cultivate a practice of sitting silently EVERY day, or better, twice a day. While the technique has been practiced by many in a "religious" context, it is not dependant on your belief system. It relieves stess and helps concentration while conditioning the nervous system. My training started over 30 years ago, while in High School, when I learned and practiced the TM technique. While an undergraduate in religious studies I took furthur instructions in the Rinzai Zen and Theravada Budhist traditions. My meditation expe…

I'm curious if anyone has done any solo bicycle tours (that is, no SAG vehicle). My biggest concern is, of course, food. Not wanting to lug all my food with me (while fruits and veggies could be bought along the way I'd probably bring the basics of rice, oatmeal and couscous with me). I haven't done any tours this year but will likely do either a 700-1000 mile tour next year. Previous tours I did were as an omnivore so food wasn't an issue. So I'm curious as to how others dealt with this and what challenges, if any, they met.

Hey, all you Yogis , I've read there are specific exercises for certain things: What are the best for enhancing digestion? I'm not having any problems with it, myself (though a couple friends I've gotten into eating more raw say they are having issues), but I do notice that after a meal, I, not only feel the need to stretch, but also feel much better after I do. I don't go onto the floor or anything; I just stretch up high and pull my arms, do side bends and hold, etc. Feels good. So I'm wondering if there are specifics? Thanks.

I go to yoga once a week. There is a free class at the library twice a week and I started going to the class on Saturday mornings. The class is nice, but not very challenging. I would like to start doing yoga more often than once a week. There's a yoga studio just around the block, but it's super expensive -- hence the free classes at the library. I was thinking for the cost of one or two sessions at the expensive studio it would be great to invest in a DVD that I could use over and over again. Does anyone here have any recommendation? And if so, can you also say a little bit about why you recommend it? Thanks!

Hey guys I found a new outdoor soccer league. Below is more info. Contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in playing. I recommend about 10 players a team dedicate a player as a manager and make sure each team has a goalie. It will be cheaper cost wise per team, since it cost us $2 more run an individual player online (We would have to charge a surcharge). Cost is $450 per team or $47.00 per player. (Pretty cheap) 4 Quarters for the season (Fall, Spring, Winter and Summer), with about 2 weeks between each season. Games on Saturday and Sunday Evening. Start Times 7 or 8pm at the Gresham or Barlow Turf field. List team history and desired skill le…
