I am considering taking up a sport when I head off to college. One that isn't too dangerous( Football ouch) but one that can hit almost every muscle group there is. I'm thinking swimming( A friend of mine in a Legend of Zelda Forum) told me swimming would proaboably be it. anyone agree. So if it is( or isn't) What else is there to consider?

COMBAT: I understand that the Gracie family have their own ideas on good diet? CARLEY GRACIE: That's right. My father made a study of the chemical combinations of foods and developed a diet to promote health, athletic ability, and longevity; the entire Gracie family was trained in his diet and we lived that way. Fruits are a large part of the diet but the key is knowing which foods combine well and which foods don't go together. There are other aspects of the diet, as well. For example, we believe that radishes strengthen joints but carbonated drinks make them weak, so we try to avoid industrialized drinks in favour of water and plain fruit drinks. Peopl…

So, a friend took me along to one of his yoga classes last night on a free pass. I was pretty nervous and didn't really know what to expect but I LOVED every minute of it. I'm pretty flexible already and have great balance (from kickboxing 4 times a week) I was pretty happy to discover that I could do the eagle on my first try without much difficulty. That got me pretty stoked. Yoga seems to be the perfect thing to add to my kickboxing schedule -- wicked cross-training. I'm just wondering if going only once a week is too little? Or does it really matter how much you go?

Thought I would throw some thoughts/ ideas into the mix. Upon reading some of the Martial arts/self defense threads, ive noticed some important points missing. It seems that people tend to look for the one answer for all defense problems. And too many people are willing to come up with their opinion as the definitive answer to that persons concerns/troubles. More disturbing is the search and offering of "magic beans". The no bullshit answer is that there are none. It takes hard work, sweat, blood, and tears. It takes the willingness to admit weakness and search for truth. Just as we all know there are no magic pills for health, strength, or any sort of shor…

Personally I'm a big fan of ufc (and pride and anything else I rent off amazon) but the claim (sometimes made) that it represents a true competition of the various martial arts to me seems innaccurate. Im not saying the rules should be changed but with the set up as it is it seems to be a combination of wrestling, ju-jitsu and kickboxing. Most the other martial arts are nerfed by some part of the rules. I dont espouse real violence. I do think though that the hugging in pride and ufc would not occur in a 'real' fight. Thats to say take downs and mounts would occur but the stuck situation wouldn't. (Of course my 'real' fight experience is just a few tussles as a kid) …

I'm chillin out these days and some think Yoga will help me out even more. So I'm considering it. One of my friends from massage therapy school (8 years ago) teaches some Yoga classes here in Portland so I may go for a couple of weeks while she's still here (guest teaching at her sister's yoga studio) and then if I like it, continue on somewhere here in town. I've done yoga in the past. I used to be involved in tai chi, nia, yoga, all that stuff back when I was in massage school.

I'm going to get my eyeglasses today but its 20 miles away. So I am going to ride my old mountain bike (very heavy) all the way there, and when I cant pedal it, Im gonna walk at a fast pace. get my glasses and then pedal and walk back home. I have lots of hills to go up and down. and Im doing this on a time crunch too. I have to get there before they close. I am very skinny and weak, and totally not prepared for a long journey like this. So wish me luck!

Hey everyone, I already posted something similar to this in the intro section but thought I would repost here to see if anyone else had some ideas/info. I am a 21 year old female really wanting to start Muay Thai or MMA and I live in the Beaverton/Portland Oregon area. I respect the sport and Im interested in all aspects of it. In other words im not looking into simply for the fitness reasons although thats a great element. Im pretty athletic already and and I want to find someone that is good and where I feel comfortable. Does anyone know of any good Muay Thai or MMA gyms in the Beaverton/ Portland area? I have talked to a couple of the main guys at the straight blast gy…

Does anyone count bellydancing as a sport???? I am curently adapting to this...well, one lesson anyway I made the mistake of showing up all in black lycra (and having just taken one of the dogs for a jog had massive latic build up), and I ended up looking like a prey mantis I forgot that they were giving lessons in the aerobics room (the mirrors make you look sooo skinny). I'm looking for something a little different for a routine

Spike TV is holding a tribute to Kung Fu / Martial arts movies and I can't help but laugh at the nationalism in most of the films. Especially the anti -Japanese sentiment in "Fists of Fury" - "No dogs or Chinese allowed"...it really portrays the Japanese as vile bastards! This is understandable-much like our cold war films like Rocky IV and others...(Here's some funny info...in Rambo IV the "good guys" are the noble Mujahadeen...fighting the "evil" Russians...FYI the Mujahadeen were the predecessors to al-qaeda, and the the Russians invaded Afghanistan to stop Islamis fundamentalism...my how times have changed!) Notice how westerners are often portrayed in these kung fu…

I'm really surprised that there is not more discussion about aikido on this site. It's philosophy is pretty complimentary to the vegan life style...as a matter of fact it was vegans that first introduced me to the art- long before I was vegan. I'm not doggin' any other art, I just find it strange...any body here a practioner?

I've recently started a weight training routine and am mixing it in with my regular vinyasa yoga practice. One of the things I'm concerned about is that on my Yoga days I'm not really resting some of the key muscles I'm working on my weight training days. Anyone have experience with this and have thoughts/opinions/etc?

I noticed alot of different styles and how enthusiastic many were to discuss them. I also realized my ignorance of a few. Can you tell me what you think are the highlights/strengths of your various martial arts? I'm not going to be "converted," but it would be a great opportunity to share our enthusiasm. And please don't dog other styles, remember...there are no superior martial arts, only superior martial artists!
