  1. Canola oil is rapeseed oil. It got the name canola from being a large export of Canada. The name is a combination of Canada and oil. It comes from a seed in the mustard family and I have read in a few places that it leads to problems with cataracts and erosion of the lenses in your eyes if consumed too often. I have no idea if this is true, because I have heard other claims to it being a healthy oil.
  2. That sounds really tasty, I had thought nutritional yeast wasn't raw. Is there a certain raw version to look for? Or is it all raw?
  3. A raw challenge sounds great. I just ordered a Blend-tec (similar to Vitamix) and am going to start messing with some sprouting hopefully tomorrow. It will be a challenge here in a dorm room, but I am willing to try one week totally raw. Likely my diet would be 90% fruits due to lack of a decent kitchen, fridge and room.
  4. I have finally decided to try out a no-failure lifting routine. Before, I was doing the old fashioned way of hitting each muscle group once per week and to its knees for multiple sets. Now I am going to try a more HST style training method. I did it last week and made some progress, though it is really hard to not push to failure. Seems like a bit of a paradox that it is harder to not push yourself as hard. I am going to start taking a better log, but here is how it has looked so far (I started this training on a cruise ship, so the equipment was limited and I couldn't do squats and some other key exercizes). Day 1 Dumbell Bench-6, 8, 7 reps at 60x2 Incline Dumbell-6, 7, 7 reps at 50x2 Decline Dumbell (I have problems with the development of my lower pecs, go figure)-6, 9, 8 I also did a dip machine and forearm training, but don't have the notes. I plan on doing close-grip bench and grip training with an Iron Woody Gripper. Day 2 Same, bad notes. I plan on doing pullups, dumbell rows, dumbell military, upright rows and standing barbell curls Day 3 Had to use all machines, so I won't bother listing. I plan on doing squats, straight-leg deads, calf press of some sort, abs and obliques. Rinse and repeat. I will bring some barbells into the chest routine, probably for the decline bench. Does that sound like a decent plan?
  5. I found a site that has real raw, rolled oats. I have read posts from lots of raw foodists looking for these on different boards, and I think I remember reading one somewhere on here. I am excited because this will make for much better tasting raw oatmeal than soaked oat grouts. I suppose I should maybe buy on of those home oat rollers, though, if they aren't too expensive. I lost the link for one when someone posted it on here. Here is the link to the oats: http://www.goldminenaturalfood.com/raw/detail.aspx?ID=77
  6. I just bought a bottle of this at my local health store and it is some amazing stuff; I think I am addicted. I am converging onto a raw diet all the time. I was at around 75% until I went on vacation, where it all went to hell. Now that I am back, I am determined to become more raw again and knowing that there is a raw drink as yummy as kombucha is heartening. Giving up my teas (coffee I am basically over) is going to be hard, but having a kombucha now and then will be helpful.
  7. Welcome back. What helped me the most was a combination of weight lifting, which I have always loved, and cardio that is fun. Well, that and cutting back on muffins myself.

    Hello!

Welcome. Yes, there is much more to find here than bodybuilding.
  9. Oh, yes, it is. I just had my first one about a half hour ago and I love it. The tastes of fruit and greens really do complement eachother.
  10. I bumped the thread by asking about frozen spinach and he thought the intro was new. I have never paid attention to the prices of some of the fresh greens in the store and took a look at some spinach. The price is actually closer to frozen than with most veggies, so I can easily afford to make my smoothies with spinach. I am drinking a pear spinach combo right now and it is awesome. I plan on starting to make one of these every morning for a little while and see what it does for me. I will get in some kale and other veggies in when I can, but most of the time it will probably be a banana spinach smootie, because that is the cheapest.
  11. I should be getting my pictures taken tomorrow. I need to get them done so that I can look my crappiest when I first snap them.
  12. Most people do not focus very much on legs because they are not a 'sexy' body part. I love to exercise my legs, they are my favorite part of my workout. I am the opposite of most people and I actually have disproportionately large legs. They are the best part of my body and grow the most consistently.
  13. Welcome. I will have to check out some of thos bands you mentioned. I haven't heard of quite a number of them and I am always looking for new music. As for the language thing, I believe you should talk in the way that seems right to you; but if others are offended, you should probably try to tone down what you are saying in respect to them.
  14. Welcome. I was the only vegan among my friends when I first went to it, but one has been converted and two more are on the way. Being vegan here in small town middle America can be difficult at times, also; few people really know what a vegan is. I would think France would be particularly difficult for a vegan because of all the good cooking and use of cheese
  15. I have been looking at these green smoothies quite a bit lately. I love greens, but it is hard to eat a lot of them, especially raw. These smoothies sound like a good solution. I would like to buy all the fresh I can, but I am in college and cannot splurge so much on it. Would frozen greens be any good at all? Or is it mostly pointless to put these in a smoothie due to nutrient loss from freezing? Bananas are cheap and I love them, so I could use lots of bananas in my smooties.
  16. What exactly do you mean by this? Meant by whom? Because animals do not cook food. People evolved (or were created, whatever) to eat whole foods straight from the source, no tampering. I am not raw, but would like to give it a shot someday when I am not a poor college student. Right now I try to eat around 75% of what I eat in the cafeteria here raw, but other than that, I mostly eat hot cereal in my room.
  17. Yes, Princess Mononoke is one of my favorites. That and Grave of the Fireflies.
  18. People in Asia must have high levels of homosexuality. That must explain why they have such a problem population their countries adequately.
  19. I used to have a beard through high school and early in college. I shaved it about a year and a half ago, and I must say, shaving my whole face every day is a pain in the ass sometimes.
  20. I had trouble with them when I made the transition to veganism. I suppose it was all the extra soy products and fiber from veggies and beans. Now I am basically normalized and do not fart more than I used to.
  21. Psyclon Nine is a good death metal type band. They are heavily electronic and their singer has the craziest voice I have ever heard. He barely distorts it, which is uncommon in aggrotech. Give them a try on MySpace.
  22. I am transitioning from two years of training in Kuk Sool Won (a newer Korean art which few are familiar with) to Hapkido. There is no school for Kuk Sool near my new residence, so the change is necessary. Since both are Korean, and from what I have read about Hapkido, arts which are comprehensive and take techiniques from all the arts of Korea, should it be a fairly easy transition? Will the two years of Kuk Sool help significantly in my Hapkido training? Reading about Hapkido, it really seems to be the art for me, so the change will likely be a good thing anyway.
  23. Sorry, that example of calories is from lentils if anyone is wondering.
  24. I have been having trouble pinning down the caloric content and breakdown of most legumes, mainly thing within the pea family. Every package of them says that 1/4 cup has different calories, protein and fiber. I have taken into account whether or not the fiber is subtracted from the calories and that has not helped. There is simply no consistency I can find. Right now, I am going from the official USDA measurement. The caloric breakdown in that even does not add up correctly. I just want to have some idea of how many calories I am consuming with them, because the range for an equal-sized serving ranges from 80-160 calories. Again, taking fiber into account does not make it consistent.
