  5. veg dad - have you tried almond milk? Chocolate almond milk is very good. What brand of soy milk do you like? For me, Chocolate SILK soy milk kicks ass - even dairy chocolate milk's ass! It is so good that I know many omnis which buy Silk instead of the dairy chocolate milk. i've never tried the vanilla though as I am not a vanilla person. Tis all about the chocolate for moi!   6. Staying in your target heart range/fat burning range is essential for burning fat and not muscle. Your target heart range for burning fat is 65-75% of your max heart rate. TO calculate your range, take the number 220 and subtract your age: that is called your max heart rate. Multiply that number by 65% and 75%. Keep your heart rate between those two numbers while exercising and you will burn fat, not muscle. So, let's take my numbers as an example. I am 30 years old so: 220 - your age = max heart rate 220 - 30 = 190. So 190 is my max heart rate. Now take your max heart rate and multiply it by 65 % and 75% to get your fat burning range. So, for me that woulld be 190 X 65% = 124 190 X 75% = 143 So my fat burning range/target range is 124 - 143. If I keep my heart rate between these two numbers while doing cardio, I am burning fat, not muscle. As you get more cardiovascularly fit, you will find that you will need to do a more intense workout to get your heart rate up to your target range. A lot of newbies to fitness always make the mistake of killing themselves on cardio because they see a really fit person running fast on the treadmill. So they think that they need to also run that fast to get that fit. What they dont realize though is that that person's heart rate is probably in their zone. But if somebody who is not cardiovascularly fit tries to run at the same speed, their heart rate will be through the roof which isnt what you want (at least not for a sustained amount of time). SO always let your heart rate monitor be your guide - not what other people seem to do doing on the treadmills! Cardio for fat burning purposes is really all about your heart rate. That is why it really doesnt matter what form of cardio you choose - so long as it can get your heart rate up to where it should be. If waving your arms violently in the air and jumping up and down gets your heart rate to wear it should be, then it doesnt matter from a fat burning perspective if you choose to do that over, say, a treadmill work out. Choose something that is fun for you and can get your heart rate up to where it needs to be - that is the key to good cardio! hope that helped.

Yup - you will find that even those that start their vegan path for health reasons often become motivated by ethical considerations (see www.meetyourmeat.com - and you can always provide this link as another reason for going vegan to the skeptical or confused questioners of your veganism), and then even environmental considerations. It is like a process of awakening - dont really know how else to describe it. When you really read and ponder it, there is every compelling reason in the world for veganism and nothing compelling against it! I love love love knowing that I have chosen a path that respects my body, the earth and the anonymous individuals unfortunate enough to be born "food animals." John Robbins is a great writer! I have such respect for the man for walking away from loadsa money as heir to the Baskin Robbins empire in order to tread upon the delicate earth as gently as possible. His books should be required reading in schools - maybe you can assign some parts of the book to your students? What grade do you teach? Wish I could say my fruit intake has gone through the roof. I was a die hard carnivore before I went vegan and never cared for fruits or breads. It was all about the meat meat meat for me. but after having gone vegan, you are of course compelled to expand your gustatory horizons and I have found foods that I am absolutely crazy about now! Feel free to check out our recipes section for some good vegan eats. Yup, the cheese is always hard to give up. I found it harder to give up. When I had gone from omni to vegetarian, I was finding that I was substituting the lack of meat with cheese. It was horribly unhealthy. I finally woke up from my denial of thinking dairy was ethically benign and benign also from a health perspective, went vegan and have never looked back. There is some sort of scientific explanation for why cheese is literally addictive. Something in the cow's milk that is meant to be addictive so the litlle calves drink their mother's milk. Only problem though is that the poor little calves dont get their own mother's milk because we steal it for our own consumption. .   10. I agree with what Richard said (although admittedly I didnt actually read the document that Will posted). Huntington Life Sciences (vivisectors) is plain evil - and, my understanding is that they target mostly trusting and good natured animals like beagles and other dogs that they buy from shelters and their own breeders, only to torture and kill for vivisection. Truly appauling.

YOu feel better because a vegan diet is healthier for you than an animal centred diet (including "goat's milk"). The stats show that vegans generally live longer and are at a reduced risk of degenerative diseases like cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, etc. I strongly recommend that you pick up and read the book THRIVE by Brendan Brazier, vegan Ironman Triathlon champ, and also Becoming Vegan (cant recall the author). These are full of info and proper vegan nutrition, and it is important for your own health that you READ and learn about proper vegan nutrition. Going vegan shouldnt be done blindly or without a solid knowledge and understanding of a vegan diet. Make sure you become an informed vegan. In the meantime, welcome and I am sure Robert will reply soon. He has one of the best physiques and he is 100% natural and vegan, and has no problem getting what he needs on a vegan diet, including protein.   16. Ya, I know you didnt say they had to be promoters of veganism but you asked for opinions and that is what I provided. My opinion is that animal rights organizations are preferable to purely animal welfare organizations because I agree with the philosophy of animal rights, not animal welfare. I am sure you know the difference but in case there are readers and newcomers to this, the difference is that animal welfarism essentially holds that animal exploitation in the service of human wants - no matter how unnecessary or trivial those wants are - is permissible, so long as it is carried out in a humane fashion. Rights philosophy, in contrast, regards the indivdiual's right to be treated with respect as inviolate. Thus, animal rights opposes human use of animals, independently of whether their rights are violated "humanely" or otherwise. I think that animals have inherent worth and the right to live free of human molestation, even "humane" molestation. Hence my preference for animal rights orgs like Friends of Animals. I am not entirely opposed to welfarist campaigns as I think that welfarist campaigns can sometimes work with rights campaigns, so long as the ultimate and final goal is animal rights, not welfare. That is why although I am an animal rightist, I have been involved in many welfarist campaigns of PETA and Sea Shepherd. But these organizations arent purely and exclusively welfarist. I would prefer to give my financial support to organizations that have an ultimate goal of animal rights, like PETA, because I dont accept the welfarist goal of "it is okay to exploit animals so long as it is done humanely." ALthough, many of the purely welfarist organizations like The Humane Society of the United States and IFAW are involved in campaigns that are dear to me like the ANTI-SEAL hunt campaign, so to that extent I support those campaigns - but not the organizations as a whole. Another example of the welfarist versus animal rights organization is the issue of Iams, the pet food company. PETA has a campaign against Iams to stop all laboratory testing on animals, and to use exclusively home testing as do many progressive pet food companies. The HSUS is not in agreement with PETA on this. So while PETA toils to get these animals OUT of Iams labs, the position of HSUS is that Iams laboratory animals are acceptable so long as the animals stuck in the labs are treated "humanely" and are caused minimal suffering. The notion that these animals have rights to NOT be imprisoned in laboratory settings is rejected by HSUS. The fact that many commercially successful companies DONT test in lab settings and thus no company needs to test in lab settings does not trouble the HSUS. And the motivation of Iams to subject animals to such a cruel existence - i.e. to maintain and increase its market share - is considered by the HSUS to be an acceptable and legitimate reason. The iams campaign is a really good example of how welfare versus rights organizations could clash. ( www.iamscruelty.com to those unfamiliar with this campaign). I really like the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society because I am in favour of direct action to save animals, even if that includes ramming a few whale factory ships (yup, you read that right. It's like a slaughterhouse / meat processing plant on a boat!). And I also admire Paul Watson's brave battles in direct defence of animals. Hope that answered your questions?

  18. Well, PETA has its great points and its not so great points (like the Got prostate cancer ad featuring The New York mayor, etc). They are the best though in terms of getting footage together and their meat your meat was one major thing that turned lots of people veg. That was the best thing PETA ever did I think. SOme of the organizations you noted are purely welfare organizations. I am an animal rightist, not an animal welfarist. Thus, my preferences are vegan outreach, friends of animals and the Sea Shephard Conservation Society. However, I dont always agree with Freinds of Animals' (or lee hall's to be more specific) critiques of peta. I dont think that the American SPCA is interested in vegan outreach. They are a VERY aninmal welfare organization and that is probably why you found their website non informative.

  20. Yup, and also you might want to check your b12 levels by a naturopathic doctor. And you cant get loadsa b12 from just a lil nutritional yeast. No vegan I have ever known has ever suffered from a b12 deficiency and they have been vegan for a decade in some instances. So your symtoms could be related to something else. I suggest visiting a doc but be prepared for the whole "eat meat" thing is they are old school and totally clueless about nutrition. keep us posted

Dont be discouraged.you can gain weight on a vegan diet. Just ask jonathan, rob, etc. Will has made some huge gains in mass on a vegan diet. i am sure they will respond to this post soon.
