dont worry about building a wheel, even most veterans dont so this. you can't go wrong with mavic, they are the kings of the road and have been around forever, they specialize in super durable wheels that are great for touring and training. you can find a great pair of mavic kysrium on craigslist or ebay for no more than a $200-$300, depending on year and specific type.
